Don't miss Michael Tomb and @Marcia Zach's newest exhibit, "Return to Ecotopia", now on display at Image City Photography Gallery until July 11, 2021. The gallery is located at 722 University Avenue in Rochester. Our photos are located in the Neuberger Gallery. Gallery Hours are Tuesday - Saturday 12 pm - 6 pm and Sunday 12 pm - 4 pm. Tomb writes that "there are 22 images in the show, 14 of which have never been shown in a gallery setting, During 2020, we "grew" new art with... intensity. We collaborated on Sky, Land, Stars, Suns, and a Comet for our Day and Night in the Garden series. And Marcia took her Petal Pointillism compositions to new levels. Using layers of homegrown flowers, vegetables and found objects (such as bark and broken pots), our compositions depict fantasy realms inspired by the concept of Ecotopia. One goal of Ecotopia is to manage our green environments with reverence rather than exploitation. Reverence for the garden and our planet forms the basis of our art. I have attached the exhibit poster, three other sample images (including one demonstrating our technique),and a document with clickable links to three of our online short films. There is also a link to an hour-long virtual garden (and art) tour hosted by Fruition Seeds recorded in August 2020." See more

On May 11th, Rochester City Council voted to support the creation of a local Food Policy Council (FPC), making Rochester's FPC one of the few in the country that is formally recognized and supported by legislation. As part of a long community engagement and planning process, Healthi Kids partnered with Foodlink, the City of Rochester and a planning team of residents to lay the foundation for a Food Policy Council that will be resident-led and will work with the community to c...hange food policies. These changes will support the health of the environment, ensure every kid has equitable access to foods that support their health, and everyone has opportunities to participate in a vibrant local food economy. But now's the time to turn that legislation into action! The FPC needs city residents to lead the work of prioritizing issues, forming subcommittees, creating policy recommendations, and advocating for policy change. Working together, the FPC members will drive policy, systems and environmental changes to advance a healthier, sustainable, and equitable food system. FPC members will reflect the diversity of Rochester, and contribute their lived experiences, skills, and knowledge to its work. Anyone with a passion for community change work and food policy should apply! If you live in the City of Rochester and are interested in becoming an inaugural member of the council apply here. Apply today! To learn more about membership and the Rochester FPC bylaws visit www.rocfoodpolicy.org. #HealthiKids See more

@CityofRochester Expands Support for Businesses during Pandemic (Monday, Dec. 28, 2020) Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that the City is continuing to expand and improve upon funding programs that are supporting small businesses during the coronavirus pandemic. I am proud to help the small businesses that are fighting so hard to stay open during the pandemic, said Mayor Warren These businesses are the anchors of our neighborhoods and local economy, so we must do ...everything we can to get them ready for a full recovery. Supporting local business is a crucial first step in our efforts to create more jobs, safer and more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities. With pandemic restrictions expected to continue through the winter, the City is announcing the following program additions and updates. Information and application for these programs can be found at www.cityofrochester.gov/BusinessResources. ORDER Grant, E-Commerce Support: The new ORDER Grant (Online Resources Delivering Excellent Results) provides up to $5,000 to businesses seeking to develop or upgrade their capacity for E-commerce, including web-based ordering, payment and delivery management. These tools have become even more important during the pandemic, helping to sustain businesses with customer friendly options that limit physical contact. To receive an ORDER Grant, businesses must have been operating within the city prior to Jan. 1, 2020 and be in good standing with all municipal requirements, including zoning codes, taxes and fees, insurance and fair hiring practices. Business Emergency Retention Grant (BERG), Increased Grant Limit: The City is increasing the grant limit for the BERG program from $5,000 to $8,000 per business. The funds can be used for a variety of working capital uses and unpaid bills including rent, insurance, inventory and utilities, making the grant very flexible. New grant limits will go into effect Jan. 1. Any business with an application in process can submit an amendment to seek additional funding under the new limit. Businesses that have been awarded grants under a previous limit can also apply for additional funding. To date, more than $1.5 million has been awarded to more than 600 businesses under the program.

What a year we're leaving behind FOREVER. As 2020 opened many were first shocked, disbelieving, some frightened, and later too many grieving as we lost loved ones to the growing COVID pandemic. In spring, we saw a wave of deaths by police from coast to coast followed by global protests over the racial injustice that caused it. We made it through an election that still hasn't ended the discord. Jobs lost, businesses closed. Each week some new disaster hits the news. We are al...l exhausted. It's important to remember that while we're distancing ourselves from one another and staying home, we're reaching out. There are more helpers than ever. People fill neighborhood food cupboards and stop to say hello to neighbors even if its from a distance. A younger generation is more determined to bring real justice to all people in the U.S. Good will come out of this challenging year. While the WEDGE had to suspend print publication in spring, it continues to return every other month online. Talented writers still write for us. People still read it. Advertisers still buy ads even during a protracted slow down in business. So how to sum up this year? One word--gratitude. The WEDGE ends the year just plain grateful for the goodness out there, and we wish everyone a healthy, prosperous, joy-filled, harmonious 2021 together. See more

News from the Gandhi Institute Using Our Moral Compass to Find Peace Panels on Nonviolence, Racial Justice Help Community Grapple with Tough Questions... As a community and as a nation, people are asking themselves and each other, What can we do to make peace? This week, in observance of Gandhi’s birthday, two special events at the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence will address some of the challenges we face as a nation today. On Friday, October 2, community members can spend their lunch exploring nonviolence action during a virtual panel called Nonviolence: A Strategic and Moral Compass in Extraordinary Times. Co-hosted by Rochester’s own M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and Washington DC’s Rumi Forum, this panel will provide attendees with an opportunity to reflect on and to learn about the importance of and challenges around using nonviolent action to address grievance, deprivation and social upheaval. The opportunity to co-host this dialogue with Rumi Forum seemed a natural fit to celebrate Gandhi’s birthday and International Peace Day, said Kit Miller, director at the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence in Rochester. Four panelists will guide an exploration of the current state of nonviolent action around the globe, its growing relevance amid social unrest, and efforts to make nonviolence an inherent element of individual and collective behavior. In further observance of M.K. Gandhi’s birthday, the Gandhi Institute has its annual Open House on Sunday, October 4. This year, as it is virtual due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendees will have an opportunity to break into sessions on one of the institute’s four pillars: nonviolence education, restorative practices, racial justice and sustainability. Attendance for both events is free, but preregistration is required. www.gandhiinstitute.org #### Advisory Sheet Nonviolence: A Strategic and Moral Compass in Extraordinary Times Friday, October 2, 2020 Gandhi’s Birthday and International Peace Day What Online panel discussion facilitated by four experts on nonviolence Date Friday, October 2, 2020 Time Noon 1:30PM ET Who: o Moderator: The Rev.
