This circular 1967 artwork by Will Insley may seem simplistic in form and color, but in the context of the artist's philosophy, it is in fact a building block in the structure of his mythological city. Do you know of any other artwork by an artist which is misunderstood because it is challenging for us to translate? #willinsley #wallfragment #shapedpainting #westwoodgallery #westwoodgallerynyc

No ideas but in things. William Carlos Williams This site-specific installation, titled The Open, was a collaborative effort by Miriam Bloom and Ron Morosan for their 2019 exhibition at Westwood Gallery. Quotes from an artist, a philosopher, and a poet are juxtaposed with paintings, works on paper, and sculptures by both artists, to offer perspectives on the role of art. One year ago today, artists from all around New York City gathered in SoHo to paint murals on boarded up storefronts in the wake of business shutdowns. This mural by Amir Diop entitled Untitled (Dirty Money) (2020) was painted at 455 Broadway and subsequently taken before it could be recovered by the artist. We hope we get to see it hanging again one day. #amirdiop #sohorenaissancefactory #srf #sohoartist #sohobroadway #westwoodgallerynyc

On view in the gallery, Charles Hinman’s ‘Canary Islands’ (1988), has been written about in books and exhibited in museums. In The New American Abstraction 1950-70 author Claudine Humblet speaks of Charles Hinman’s shaped painting Canary Islands, highlighting the tonal and rhythmic harmonies which constitute an innovative approach to color, where shades [are] enlivened by primary notes, white, and black. The colors interact with the cresting rhythm of the canvases, ev...oking a sense of what Humblet terms plastic unity. Canary Islands (1988) was recently featured in Charles Hinman: Structures, 1965-2014 at The Kreeger Museum, Washington D.C in 2019 -- the artist’s first major survey at a museum in over 30 years. #charleshinman #canaryislands #westwoodgallerynyc

Alan Steele’s experience as an ethnographic curator, and his childhood in the West Indies, South America, and Southeast Asia, have informed his artistic practice. Modern Equipment, Marityx Mereremex (2010) derives its name from the Kayapo tribe in Brazil. In the tribe’s language, Marityx means Those Who Show Themselves Beautifully. Steele’s artistry is an homage to the cultures he has encountered across his life, as he explores the act of being throughout his work. ...Steele continues to muse on theories of knowledge, history and the basic relationship of objects and their attachment to tradition, culture, and global divergence. Alan Steele’s solo exhibition Unconditionally Constitutional is on view in the gallery now through January 30th, 2021. #alansteele #onview #galleryartist #contemporaryart #architecturalart

Ron Morosan’s cognitive paintings will have you both puzzled and amused. The artist's cerebral artworks are intricately composed of organic shapes, geometric constructions, and sketched silhouettes. They weave together cognitive narratives that are often quirky commentaries on art and the art world, like a dog pondering a branch sculpture resting on a gallery pedestal, and other ironic scenes. James Juthstrom was a reclusive visionary artist. In the 1970s his paintings bordered on mysticism and the metaphysical. He explored outsider painting methods. In addition to using a regular brush, he cut blocks of wood to stamp patterns, or used nails in rows on a board, or q-tips as a paint brush. In his loft on Broome Street he became absorbed in a subconscious, metaphysical world he explored on canvas. He was simple, kind and humble. When we asked one of his artist friends if Juthstrom was a deep thinker, their response was, ‘are sure you are talking about Jim?’ #jamesjuthstrom #abstractexpressionism #westwoodgallerynyc

We were excited to see the Bowery Mural Wall repainted, after a year-long hiatus! The new mural was designed by Raul Ayala with a team of ten young artists. It coincides with the 25th anniversary Groundswell, an organization that uses art for change. If you’re in New York, we recommend coming down Houston+Bowery to check out the mural over the next few months.

#BoweryArtist-- Artist Mark Rothko was one of the many influential modern artists that made the Bowery their home. #ExhibitionsWeLoved -- Kehinde Wiley’s solo exhibition at the St. Louis Art Museum in 2018 blended traditional American and European portrait motifs with contemporary subjects to challenge establishment art. Wiley created 11 paintings for the exhibition, casting residents of Ferguson, MO to stand as the subjects of his works inspired by pieces from SLAM’s collection. The exhibition uplifted Wiley’s subjects and drew attention to the lack of representation of people of color in the art world.

Al Held was a major figure in the hard-edge painting movement of the late 20th century. His work often utilized the flatness of minimalist art, but broke up the picture planes with his forms to challenge the order. His resulting artworks were a dynamic mix of flat, clean shapes in a multi-layered space. Al Held, Quattro Centric XIII (1990)
