We feel it’s time to address the situation regarding free music. Some people are very passionate about this and we respect that, you’ve voiced your take on it, please allow us to explain our side. Prior to Covid we have consistently paid bands to play every Fri/Sat and have never charged a cover at the door. Yes we made money on food and drinks from the people coming to see the music. Did we have nights that we lost money by paying a band? Absolutely. That’s all part of t...he business. We continued to pay bands every weekend when we were allowed to reopen in June. Full disclosure: during June and July many of those bands contacted us and did offer to play just for tips and drinks/food and we truly appreciated their generosity. We made a point to get on stage during every performance to let the crowd know they were there for free and just for tips. As we walked off stage, we contributed to their tip bucket which encouraged others to do so. Last month NYS threw everyone a curveball by taking a few steps backwards in the reopening process. Now the only place people can have a few drinks is while seated at a table and ordering food. The first Friday of the new rules we still had a band and it did not work out well. Our outdoor music is from 7-10 due to city noise ordinance. We quickly realized that people were not leaving after they ate dinner because of the entertainment, which is great, except for all the people who had dinner reservations and we had no tables available for them. Due to that, anti-maskers, and NYS guidelines, it put our liquor license at risk and we had to make the decision to temporarily cut Fri/Sat music. Many artists/bands continued to contact us about coming to play for free so we decided to try it on off nights when we’re not booked up with reservations and people can enjoy drinks at a table on the patio for as long as they like. Knowing the lack of music around lately, we thought about our big outdoor stage just sitting here. Why not let people play? The idea is a very casual - for musicians to have a chance to play and just have some fun. The response was overwhelming and our calendar is filling quickly which is amazing and we are so grateful. Most don’t know that musicians are setting their date with us and the conversation includes getting a future paid date on the calendar when restrictions are lifted. We fully understand this arrangement is not for everyone, we are just looking to collaborate with local bands/artists and provide a place for everyone to have a good time.
