Monday Mantra: Feelings are not facts. Emotions power us daily, they are our core of our motivations. As a psychotherapist, I help others understand them, accept them, feel them, and be curious about them. Human nature is to love and accept the warm fuzzy emotions, and we tend to then push away, ignore, or hide from the negative, prickly emotions. ... Also, side note, all emotions are valid. There are no such things as bad or good emotions. Both negative and positive feelings deserve space. The good news is that feelings, (positive or negative,) are not facts! When we feel a certain way, it is best to be curious about this particular emotion or reaction, and question where it comes from. Emotions and feelings are data. They help us to better perceive our world and interactions, but they aren’t the end all be all. This is important to note when we hold onto negative interactions. For example, if your coworker or partner has a snarky tone, or looked at you funny, this does not mean that he or she is mad at you. Sometimes people interact in this way due to stress and other things going on for them. It’s possible that you are misinterpreting a message. However, when we base the situation solely off of our emotions, we can be doing ourselves a disservice. We become flooded with negative thoughts and feelings and usually jump to worst case scenarios about someone hating us! Further, with these negative emotions, our body reacts with a stress response which can sends us into a downward spiral.
