Wildlife Alliance 08.07.2021

Sad news: last week, we got a report about an injured gaur in Phnom Aoral Wildlife Sanctuary. Our team went to the rescue. The gaur was in a very bad condition: she was close to starvation and too weak to stand. She had lost the bottom part of her front leg to a snare. Our vet administered anesthetic so he could examine her, but sadly she died. She was too weak to wake up from the anesthetic but fortunately, her pain and suffering ended. Gaur are rare in Cambodia. This gaur’...s death is another reminder of the deadly threat of snares. Snares are set in the thousands throughout forests in Cambodia. And most animals will die in the snare or from their injuries later, like the gaur. Their deaths will be slow and painful, and the result will be empty forests. Snaring has reached crisis levels. Last year, Wildlife Alliance - Ministry of Environment rangers removed over 25,000 snares in the Cardamoms. Every snare can kill an animal, including rare animals like gaur. The death of this animal is also a reminder of the need for stronger action and laws on snares. Thank you to Solo Landscapes for reporting the injured gaur, and for everyone for the messages of support and well wishes for the gaur. Today marks a new chapter of the Southern Cardamoms REDD + project: providing financial support for infrastructure. This infrastructure will help local livelihoods by easing access to markets and services in Sre Ambel district, Koh Kong province. On the morning of 21st June, a ceremony was held at Dong Peng Commune Hall, Sre Ambel District. At the ceremony, Wildlife Alliance, representing the REDD+ project, provided $50,000 in direct financial assistance. This financial assis...tance will support infrastructure, including construction of the access road to the village, a bridge over the river, a secondary school, and a new health center, equipped with a doctor and sufficient medical supplies In addition, eight water wells are planned for communities within the REDD+ Project area. The wells are scheduled for construction, for which Wildlife Alliance completed preliminary drilling this week. The finance for this infrastructure comes from the sale of carbon credits to international companies through the Southern Cardamoms REDD+ Project. Therefore, villages in the Cardamom Rainforest are working directly with international companies to counter the effects of global climate change from carbon emissions. These emissions prevented through forest protection. In return for protecting the Cardamom forest, communities benefit from improved infrastructure which improves livelihoods. Thank you to the REDD + project led by the Ministry of Environment in partnership with Wildlife Alliance for making this happen. Rangers in the Cardamoms rescued 2 elongated tortoises. The tortoises were uninjured and rangers released them back into the wild. The species is globally Critically Endangered and protected in Cambodia. Poachers target turtle and tortoise species for food and the illegal pet trade. These two were lucky! Last year, rangers confiscated a total of 92 turtles/tortoises, including other critically endangered species. They are not the only ones rescuing turtles and tortoises. Ou...r wildlife crime law enforcement unit, the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team confiscated 262 whole turtles/tortoises last year. If you see wildlife for sale or being kept as a pet, including turtles, please contact the Wildlife Crime Hotline - Cambodia "" Wildlife Crime Hotline - Cambodia Facebook page or call 012500094 Thanks for helping to protect Cambodia’s wildlife! Thanks to Wildlife Conservation Society WCS Cambodia & EU Partners Against Wildlife Crime Partners Against Wildlife Crime for supporting the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team and mobile education unit - Kouprey Express to stop the illegal trade in freshwater turtles throughout Cambodia. #protect #freshwater #turtle #turtletuesday #wildlife #environment #wildlifecrime #habitat #protection #IAMNOTFOOD #iamnotapet #endangered #endangeredspecies #stopeatingwildlife #protectwildlife #antipoaching #supportconservation #conservationoptimism #jointhealliance #wildlifealliance

Dozens of birds were recently intercepted from just one poacher by our rangers in the Cardamom Mountains. Poaching, using simple nets, snares, and guns, is causing a hauntingly quiet crisis in Asia's forests. Rescue, Care and Release! Last month we released our male pangolin, Thom, for his second chance at a wild life! He was rescued in 2017 after escaping from a traffickers bag and walking into a restaurant in Phnom Penh where the owners made the right decision to call our Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team. After three years living at our Wildlife Release Station in the Cardamom Rainforest and contributing one pangopup, Roux, to our breeding programme we have released him back into the forest! #JoinTheAlliance #RescueCareAndRelease #Pangolin

It’s breeding time for Cambodia’s smallest wild cat species, the leopard cat. It is also the time for clearing the rice fields for the new season. Unlucky kittens that are found in the rice fields can find themselves in the pet trade. We currently have three in our care, they are the lucky ones who found themselves in the right hands and will all have a chance to be released back into the wild! #JoinTheAlliance #Rescue #Care #Release

The cutest resident at our nursery at the moment, but do you know what it is? A binturong is a tree-dwelling omnivore that lives in dense evergreen forests in Cambodia. This little one will eventually join our breeding programme to help boost wild populations! #JoinTheAlliance #CaptiveBreedingProgramme

Cambodia has the world’s largest population of banteng, a species of wild cow. We provide support to 2 different communities to protect small herds from snares and poaching. This is one of our residents at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre who was saved from being sold on a market in 2015, his mother was sold for meat and he had a suspected snare injury. #Rescue #JoinTheAlliance #Banteng
