This adult female Eastern Gray Squirrel was admitted to our hospital yesterday with a suspected head injury due to a car collision. Right now, her condition is critical as she is unaware of her surroundings and unable to walk, eat, or drink. Our rehabilitators are currently providing supportive care of pain medication, sub-q fluids, and syringe-feedings of fruit & vegetable baby food until she improves. #wildlifehospital #wildliferescue #animalrescue #squirrel #squirrels #squirrelsofinstagram #wildlife #longislandwildlife #wildliferescuecenter

This weekend brought a unique little admission to our hospital...a Silver-haired bat! In NYS, bats require a special license for rehabilitation as they are considered to be a rabies vector. Fortunately, this bat appears to be quite healthy! He was found on the ground in a garage where we suspect he may have been inadvertently disturbed during his hibernation. On admission to our hospital, he received a thorough examination by our Rabies Vector Species rehabilitator, Shayn...a! He will spend the winter with us and be released again come early spring! Silver-haired bats are a local species which are named for their silver fur tips easily seen on their back and body. They are found throughout most areas of the US with exception of the Southeastern and Southwestern coasts. As adults, Silver-haired bats weigh in at only 8-11 grams! While some people are fearful of bats, these nocturnal mammals are a great benefit to the environment and help to naturally control insect populations.

Even though outreach events are still on hold, our Education team still works with our ambassador animals daily! Yesterday, Volunteer Marcia enjoyed a nice walk outside with Skittles, our Eastern Screech Owl. Daily time out of their enclosures helps keep our birds comfortable with handling and provides them with the enrichment of different sights and experiences. Eastern Screech Owls are a common resident of Long Island. They can be spotted from NYC all the way to the East End. This pint sized owl can be seen in two distinct color morphs, red, like Skittles, and gray. On occasion, we spot an intermediate brown phase as well. Skittles was admitted to our center after a vehicle strike in Calverton. She resides permanently as an ambassador due to an eye injury that has impacted her ability to hunt and survive in the wild.

When it comes to pollinators, you’ve heard about the bees and the butterfliesbut what about the #bats? Did you know these winged wonders are responsible for he...lping to fertilize more than 500 species of plants worldwide? In tropical and desert environments especially, bats rule the night-time pollination scene. And you likely benefit. If you love mangoes, bananas, or agave/tequila, you can thank a bat! #BatWeek : Doug Greenberg
