Woodlawn Park 02.01.2021

Fall Rake Day 2020 was a great success! Many thanks to our park committee for leading the charge, and to the staff and volunteers from Northern Rivers Family of Services and the Union College Kenney Community Center for helping to rake the entire park. A full dumpster filled to the top and a great day wrap up the year!!

Park Advisory: Yesterday’s afternoon storm wrecked havoc across the city. Many are still without power. The park did see a downed tree and many fallen limbs. Fortunately, there was no damage to any of the park’s equipment! Please do exercise caution in back of park where a tree fell between the playground areas and by the exercise stations where many limbs have come down. The city has been notified and we hope the debris will soon be cleared.

Thank You to the Community & Park Update News... It's nearing the end of the summer season, and we just wanted to send out a big thank you to the residents of Woodlawn and City of Schenectady for making the most out of a crazy 2020. While this has been an unprecedented year, we have moved forward with some work at the park this year. Just last week, we installed the last of the new, in-ground benches to complete the incorporation of newly steel constructed and TenderTuff coat...ed site amenities to the park; a completion of part of last year's major grant funding awarded by multiple foundations. We also were fortunate to bring the neighborhood our new mascots to greet park goers and installed a new community library box offering free books to our youth and community. This season also brought us the Summer Park program offered through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady, where fun and educational activities were offered to our youth and new friendships were made. See pics of art projects from last week of programming. And while this was a unique year, our volunteers continued to work and bring these new enhancements to the park. But we also want to recognize you, the community, for honoring our work while enjoying the park. During this unprecedented time of COVID and delayed openings of the parks, the residents returned this season in a big way. There was an increased usage of the park and its newly installed splash pad area and other recreational offerings. And, during this time of increased usage, we are happy to report that residents have been very respectful of the park and property where littering has been diminishing with each passing year of our work! We thank you for adhering to park rules, general quality of life matters, respecting your neighbors and fellow park goers, and for honoring our work - remembering that it takes a community to make things better for all. And, as we soon will enter 2021 - our tenth year of redevelopment - we want to extend our appreciation to you, and hope to celebrate our work over these last 10 years and reopen of our signature annual events at the park. We do plan to open things up a bit before then with our Annual Volunteer Fall Rake Day on November 14th - keep your eyes open for our event flier in the near future. Event to be held with social distancing measures followed. We hope you can join us to help close out the 2020 season at the park. Once again, thank you for supporting and honoring our work!

Your response matters. Health clinics. Fire departments. Schools. Even roads and highways. The census can shape many different aspects of your community. Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year. The results determine how many seats in Congress each state gets. It's mandated by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2: The U.S. has counted its population every 10 years since 1790.

Bello! We're back. Here today with a few more completed projects to announce at Woodlawn Park. The third and final in-ground picnic table was installed at the park! Located in the back of the park beyond the playgrounds nearby one of the grills, this table will provide some shaded area to eat and enjoy your time at the park. We've also installed all the grills at the park for your enjoyment. Hand Sanitizer pump bottles have also been installed! There are four of them located ...at the following spots: 1) the backside of building near splash pad area; 2) the sign located at the exercise station area; 3) the sign on right side of playground area; and 4) on the Have-A-Ball sign next to basketball court and hopscotch area. The new Splash Pad Directions sign was installed - located on the building nearby the splash pad area. As well, the background signage for the splash pad and the park "things-to-do" banner in the parking lot area were hung back up. We've also pressured washed the toddler playground area to brighten up things for a cleaner look and experience. We plan to address the other side of the playground area soon. A new "Lost & Found" box was installed under the pavilion. Any items left in the park will be placed in the box for several weeks prior to disposal/donation. Any expensive items (e.g. cell phones) that our volunteers find will be held inside until claimed. Look inside the box (pic included): there area already some items that need to be claimed. And lastly, a sign placard was hung on the back of building to help remind the community to please help keep Woodlawn clean! Please remember when using the park to also obey the Social Distancing guidelines. We have "reminder" signs throughout the park. While visiting, please maintain at least a 6 foot distance from others you are not with and wear face coverings to protect others, especially if distancing may not be maintained. Once again, we hope you enjoy these recent updates to the park. Happy weekend to all and stay safe! :-)

Park Advisory - Non use of equipment: We have been getting a lot of people asking, "When will the playgrounds/park open?" or "Is the splash pad open yet?". Well, the city has not made any decisions yet on its parks. Social distancing is still in effect, and while some other municipalities have opened things up a bit more with regard to their parks, the City of Schenectady is still operating as it has for these last few months - i.e. while people can visits parks, there is no ...playing of basketball, no use of the playgrounds or other equipment and no operation of pools or splash pads. Be advised that the city is assessing things day-to-day. Once they do make any decisions, we will be working with them to open up at Woodlawn Park, and we'll be sure to make announcements on this page. Once these openings do occur, they may be for certain things, so please be patient as things proceed. See more

Bello again! We're back to announce the following updates for Woodlawn Park. First, we have created a web site page for the Park! You can go to www.woodlawnneighborhood.org/woodlawn-park to see our page. Of particular interest, we hope you can check out https://www.woodlawnneighborhood.org/redvelopment-projects to see the timeline of our work since we decided to help bring our park back to glory! Beginning in 2011, view the major projects and some pictures of the work complet...ed. Second, we have taken the down time to continue some more updates at the park. Just this past week, the hopscotch area has gotten a make-over: power washing was completed and fresh coats of paint was added to brighten up the area. We hope kids - young and old - will enjoy these! As well, the Community Library Box was installed! Books will be donated by The Emily Willey Foundation for neighborhood youth to read and share/own. If you would like to donate more children's books to this or any other community library boxes, you can contact us or The Emily Willey Foundation to inquire. Also installed this week - an in-ground, handicap accessible picnic table located just beyond the exercise stations, a few feet onto the grassy area before the playground area; and another in-ground bench. We also stained the planter box recently installed below our sign at the park entrance. Lastly, we have been getting a lot of people asking, "When will the playgrounds/park open?" or "Is the splash pad open yet?". Well, the city has not made any decisions yet on its parks. Social distancing is still in effect, and while some other municipalities have opened things up a bit more with regard to their parks, the City of Schenectady is still operating as it has for the last few months - i.e. while people can visits parks, there is no playing of basketball, no use of the playgrounds or other equipment and no operation of pools or splash pads. Once these openings do occur, they may be for certain things, so please be patient as things proceed. Once again, we hope you enjoy these most recent updates that have come to the park. Happy weekend to all :-)

Woodlawn Park 01.08.2020

Bello again! We're back this weekend to bring you the final 2020 park addition announcement and an update on park news! Coming soon...thanks to one of last year's Thriving Neighborhoods Grant awardees (Our Community Libraries project), Woodlawn Park will have a Library Box! The box will be filled with donated books for neighborhood youth to read and share or own. The library box will be installed directly left of the planter boxes in front of the Area of Reflection as you pro...ceed from the parking lot and into the park grounds. Special thanks to the The Emily Willey Foundation for heading up this project to bring free library boxes to neighborhoods around the City of Schenectady! Please Note: Regarding park openings...While the governor this week has decided to open things up more with regard to parks, the decisions to open them has been left to the local municipalities and leaders. We will be following the local laws and regulations for when the playgrounds, basketball courts and equipment can open in the City of Schenectady. Once these decisions are made, we will be working with the city to open up at Woodlawn Park, and we'll be sure to make announcements on this page. Once these openings do occur, they may be for certain things, so please be patient as things proceed. Once again, we hope the addition of the library box will brighten your days while visiting the park! Happy weekend to all :-)
