State Department begins resumption of passport processing On Friday, the State Department has resumed processing U.S. passports, and will initially focus on clearing a backlog of 1.7 million pending applications before it will start processing new requests. This is welcome news, and something ASTA has strongly advocated for. As you can see on the update page below, 12 of the 29 passport agencies and centers around the United States have entered "Phase 1" of the resumption process. Applications will be processed on a "first in, first out" basis, and it will take an estimated six to eight weeks to clear the backlog dating from late February.
