The central panel of The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, also known as the Ghent Altarpiece, shines like never before. The second stage of the restoration of Van Eyck’s masterpiece has come to an end.

This engineer is using powerful lights, cameras, and computer software to digitally remove the varnish from the "Mona Lisa," allowing people today to see the painting as da Vinci once did.

Consolidation of a 16th century painting on wooden panel attributed to Jacob Grimmer, owned by one of my clients. I am in deep concentration applying very mild pressure with the mini iron that is set on a medium heat level, relaxing the lifting paint areas and coaxing them back down to where the adhesive I applied earlier will hold them down. If I press too hard the lifting paint will shatter and if I put too much heat in one area it will melt the paint. After the lifting pai...nt is stabilized, I remove any excess adhesive in that area.

In 2020, David Yanez founder of Yanez Fine Art Conservation will be celebrating his 30th year as a paintings conservator in New York City. Before starting his own practice, David started out as an apprentice and worked his way up through many of the best paintings conservation studios in New York. Combined with his masters and bachelor’s degrees in fine arts, the knowledge, experience, techniques, artistic skills, and craftsmanship gained throughout his career are rare amongs...t painting conservators. He has restored invaluable paintings from 16th century to contemporary, for major auction houses, institutions, dealers and collectors. Unlike the large commercial and academic conservation studios, David makes house calls and brings a life-time of experience and personal service to your door step. Earlier this year a conservator at the Hamilton Kerr Institute made a surprising discovery while working on a 17th-century painting owned by the Fitzwilliam Museum. As Shan Kuang cleaned the surface, she revealed the beached whale that had been the intended focus of the composition. The artwork is now back on display in the Fitzwilliam's newly-refurbished gallery of Dutch Golden Age painting.

I have this beautiful but very dirty George Inness painting in my studio for restoration. It has a discolored surface dirt layer, plus a discolored natural resin varnish, which need to be removed. It also has old retouching covering cracks that may not be able to be removed since it was done in oil paint, which cross links with the original paint layer. Luckily the restoration is only limited to a few areas. The cleaning test reveals where the dirt layer was removed and next ...to it on the left where the varnish was later removed. George Inness (May 1, 1825 August 3, 1894) was a prominent American landscape painter. One of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced, in turn, by the Old Masters, the Hudson River school, the Barbizon school, and, finally, the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose spiritualism found vivid expression in the work of Inness's maturity (18791894). Although Inness’s style evolved through distinct stages over a prolific career that spanned more than forty years and 1,000 paintings, his works consistently earned acclaim for their powerful, coordinated efforts to elicit depth of mood, atmosphere, and emotion. Neither pure realist nor impressionist, Inness was a transitional figure who intended for his works to combine both the earthly and the ethereal in order to capture the complete essence of a locale. A master of light, color, and shadow, he became noted for creating highly ordered and complex scenes that often juxtaposed hazy or blurred elements with sharp and refined details to evoke an interweaving of both the physical and the spiritual nature of experience. In Inness’s words, he attempted through his art to demonstrate the "reality of the unseen and to connect the "visible upon the invisible." Within his own lifetime, art critics hailed Inness as one of America's greatest artists. Often called "the father of American landscape painting," Inness is best known for his mature works that not only exemplified the Tonalist movement but also displayed an original and uniquely American style. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Inness
