Yonkers Guardians Association 20.12.2020

An incredible event this past Friday. Food and toys given to hundreds of families. A special thank you to The Matthew Wallace Foundation, Jeni Long-Wallace, and Hector Santiago for being such amazingly gracious partners. We’ve learned so much. Special thank you to all of our elected officials who came to support, Council President Mike Khader, Councilwoman Tasha Diaz, representatives for Councilwoman Corazon Pineda-Isaac and Councilwoman Shanae Williams. (Hopefully didn’t miss anyone). Thank you to Councilman John Rubbo for rolling up his sleeves and helping us out with with the heavy lifting. Thank you to all who volunteered their time and efforts. This doesn’t happen without all of us. We are looking forward to increased collaborative efforts in 2021 for the betterment of our City.

One of the most genuinely good hearted people you’ll ever meet. This is Det. Stuart Barksdale Jr. his entire career. He’s always worked the overnight shift so most of his good deeds never see the light of day. This doesn’t surprise us at all, this is everyday Stu

I appeal to all of you to get into this great revolution that is sweeping this nation. Get in and stay in the streets of every city, every village and hamlet of this nation until true freedom comes, until the revolution of 1776 is complete. Hon. John Lewis 1963 March on Washington

Let us define change here in Yonkers. For the first time in Yonkers history we have the opportunity to elect the first two African-American women to sit as a Yonkers City Court Judge. Let us make sure our voices are heard. This is part of what change looks like. On June 23 we can vote for BOTH Karen Best (18A) AND Verris Shako (19A) for Yonkers City Court Judge. PLEASE SHARE!

On June 2nd the City of Yonkers saw it’s 2nd Protest in response to the murder of George Floyd and to the tenets of systemic racism. Their purpose was to have their voices heard and to effect real change. Pain, anger, and frustration was passionately expressed by powerful young leaders in our community. They also spoke with an intentional intellect. They were precise and purposeful. Not only did they share their voice, they also came with a list of demands, a list of acti...onable items they felt that if met could lend to the process of mending, healing, and building. Organizers Hector Santiago, Prince Robinson, Maddie Chapman, and some powerful young champions did an amazing job pulling it all together. You are all part of the solution. In regards to your list of demands. The Yonkers Guardians, being Law Enforcement Officers in the City of Yonkers Police Department, believe that these demands are reasonable and would play a major role in accomplishing our collective goals. We support you not only with this list, but in all endeavors sought to bring about the change that is so desperately needed. Understand that accomplishing these goals would take a collaborative effort, not only by the community stakeholders, city government, and the Yonkers Police Department leadership, but by the Police Unions as well. These are trying times, but leaders are now called to act. We are writing history in this moment. We must acknowledge that and respond accordingly. My community, stay strong and keep pushing, we will be here with you.

An honor to be among some powerful advocates for the Black Community. Grateful to hear words that needed to be spoken to those in attendance. Humbled to be called to speak and lend a voice to what we’re so passionate about. Actions and accountability going forward.
