Today my YPD tribe gave over 225 kids lots of joy in the form of toys and books with the help of some very special people. We have to thank Richard J Senato, a...nd his foundation, Love Holds Life and his friends at Quintessential Mortgage Group for the massive donation of toys. Sacred Heart Church and it’s Parishioners, St Barnabas Church and the FDNY Emerald Society, my fellow YPD family and all of our friends, family and neighbors. And Tony for the means to buy my truck, which has been earning its keep. So far we have given about 450 kids tons of goodies and we will be packing the patrol cars tomorrow for surprise deliveries on the street. We are blessed to be in a position to help so many, particularly this year. So thank you all and Merry Christmas See more
The Yonkers Early Childhood Academy and Cross Hill Academy now have a new state of the art, accessible playground. Proud to have secured the 2018 State funding ...for the Yonkers Public Schools that helped to make this project a reality. Once we get back to normal, this new playground will offer children a safe, open space to play and socialize with their classmates. Playing is part of the learning experience! Thank you to my colleagues State Senator Shelley Mayer and Nader Sayegh, New York State Assemblyman, 90th District, along with Mayor Mike Spano and Councilwoman Tasha Diaz for truly making this a team effort. #yonkers #cityofyonkers #education #statefunding #yonkerspublicschools #yonkersearlychildhoodacademy #crosshillacademy #playground #ribboncutting
I learned some very difficult news this weekend, the passing of former Yonkers City Council member and founder of the United Slavonian League, Nicholas Benyo. My deepest condolences and sympathies are with his family during this trying time. May he rest easy.

AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS just announced that New York-based artist Vinnie Bagwell has been awarded the inaugural Jorge and Darlene Pérez Prize in Public Art & Civ...ic Design, a first-of-its-kind national program established by the Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation. The award will include a cash stipend of $30,000, as well as additional support for Bagwell to participate in learning opportunities and discussion about her work with national leaders in the arts and other allied fields. These programs include a virtual panel about art and civic design in celebration of the Public Art Network’s 20th anniversary, held on December 3 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Bagwell has been a longstanding champion for utilizing the arts to drive social, educational, and economic growth in her community. She is the co-founder, vice president, and executive director of the Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to honor, dignify, and restore the humanity of enslaved Africans in America by transforming them from objects to subjects through art in a public garden in Yonkers, New York. Bagwell is leading the creation of this urban-heritage public art project, which marks the 400th anniversary of enslaved Africans being brought to America and commemorates the first enslaved Africans to be freed by law in the United States. From Police Commissioner John J. Mueller: The #YonkersPD was honored today with a visit by Miss Haley Quatrocci and her wonderful family. Haley reached out to ...the Yonkers Police to look for a project to assist our police officers. Ultimately, she settled on raising funds to supply a significant number of canvas pouches that can be attached to the officers duty belt and carry rubber gloves. Haley’s idea was both extremely thoughtful and important, considering the concerns with COVID-19 and other blood-borne pathogens. It will provide the officers the safety of having a pair of disposable gloves at the ready in the event they are needed. Just a quick thought: so many people today feel as though a simple social media post always equals accomplishment. Haley took an idea that would help others and put her thoughts into an actionable plan and executed the plan. She took the path of what I like to refer to as 'service over sermons'. Her truly selfless act are a lesson to all of us, not to just provide thoughts on a given topic, but to weave actionable steps with an eye on making the world a better place - one kind gesture at a time. Thank you Haley!" See more

We have one of the most important elections of our lifetime ahead of us, and it’s been exciting to see so many engaged in the process and energizing our commun...ity. Please make a plan to vote. When the pandemic’s spread was at its peak, Yonkers’ bravest were on the frontlines throughout it all. The pandemic also created severe financial difficulties f...or municipalities across the nation. Senator Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand recognized this critical need for funding. Working together, they secured an $11.5 million grant to hire an additional 30 firefighters. This grant will not only support our current firefighters but will save taxpayers $3 million a year. Now more than ever, we need to invest in our essential workers who are on the frontlines, and this critical funding, thanks to our federal leaders, assures our City can support them.
