Another small excerpt from our interview in the June issue of Of Counsel magazine, about how law firms can effectively utilize PR: "To be effective, their relationship with me or their PR person needs to be a partnership, not a "vendorship," and I know that isn’t a word, but maybe it should be. Your PR person needs raw content to work with. They can certainly help to pull it out of you, and then turn it into something wonderful, but you’ve got to be a part of that process. An...d then there is the relationship with the reporter. It might only last for the lifespan of the story, but it is a relationship nonetheless, and in order for it to succeed, both sides have to benefit. You’re benefiting when they’re positioning you as an expert, a thought leader in your field. But the reporter needs you to help them shine as well. They are under the same pressures as we are to perform, to get clicks, to tell an interesting story, so they need you to alert them to important developments, help them understand what’s happening and provide compelling quotes or other content. So, to sum up, one very good thing that law firms can do for PR purposes is to help me help reporters help them. Everyone needs to help each other." #publicrelations #legalmarketing #lawfirms #mediarelations #pr

Zamo PR founder, Tania Zamorsky, recently spoke with Of Counsel Senior Editor, Steve Taylor, for the magazine's June issue. She recalled one of her favorite examplesstill, almost a decade laterof successful thought leadership PR," secured by (then) Kaye Scholer’s PR & Communications team, for one of the firm’s superstar white collar partners who was willing to offer objective and insightful third-party commentary on breaking news. "When this kind of PR campaign works, in ...terms of both efficacy and impact, there is nothing like it," Tania said. She also shared some thoughts about the benefits that law firms can reap from good public relations, as well as some of the PR mistakes law firms and lawyers commonly make. "There needs to be a healthy balance between not fearing PR, to the extent that they avoid it entirely, and yet also respecting it and working within its boundaries," Tania explained, in the interview. "Helping lawyers do thatto understand that landscape and navigate it safelyis one of the most important aspects of my job as a PR professional." CRAFTING EFFECTIVE QUOTES AND COMMENTARY FOR PR PURPOSES Whether you are proactively offering thought leadership commentary, or you’ve received a call from a reporter about breaking news, you’ve still got to earn that quote. Anyone can provide a staid summary of what’s just happened, e.g., reciting the fact pattern and holding from a Supreme Court decision that’s just come down. You, on the other hand, should aim for something more interesting. Both the reporter, and their r...eaders, will appreciate it! If it is possible (and it isn't always), consider the following approaches: -Offer an opinion, take a position, with a strong and decisive statement -Be a bit bold, even provocative -Offer a new angle or news hook -Suggest a developing trend -Explain WHY the news really matters, the specific impact it could have, and on whom -Address some controversy that might exist Do this, and you will have a better chance of standing out from among the hordes of experts offering insights. MEDIA TRAINING TIPS FOR LAWYERS & BUSINESS EXECUTIVES- You are an accomplished attorney or executive. In law/grad school you sailedunscathedthrough all attempts to impose the Socratic or similar method. Whether from business colleagues or clients, you field questions confidently and unflinchingly. So how hard could it be to talk to a reporter? Harder than you think! Just as in law, journalism brings its own set of professional rules, procedures and ethical codes that you mu...st respect and observe. But the moves involved in this dance may not come naturally. The way you write, for example, or conduct yourself in a court or board room, does not directly translate to an interview or press conference setting. Zamo PR has prepared a short guide that will help you prepare and appear polished. Among other things, it covers: -What it means to be "on/off the record" -How to optimally structure your quotes or other content -How to anticipate and field any question - even the one you are most afraid they will ask -How to build a mutually respectful and long-lasting relationship with reporters, in which both sides benefit (a must) Please let me know if you would like me to send you a copy. #mediatraining #mediarelations #lawfirms #legalmarketing
