Anna left Russia, her family and all she knew to pursue her passion. She studied at Stonybrook with dreams to play violin with the Philharmonic Orchestra. I was in awe of her courage and determination. As we spoke about her future and what was next. She told me, I was under the instruction of my professors for so long I forgot who I am. There was a sadness in her words, yet when she played her violin I felt her joy, I saw her passion with each deliberate and powerful stroke of her bow. Often we try and fit into the mold of our, teacher’s, parent’s and professor’s expectations. Our responsibility is to understand that It is not up to societal norms to tell us who we need to be, it’s up to us to determine who we want to be and how we show up doing it!
