Fun podcast I did with Steve Hall! Although I may look like a homeless man, I do have a few good things to say about recovery enhancement :) #bum

INSIDE THE MIND OF THE MEATHEAD: It's been said that trends are set in New York City. That it happens here first, then spreads to the rest of the country. Poss...ibly the world. One trend that I predict will continue throughout 2018 - based on what I'm seeing in NYC - is fitness as entertainment. As trainers fight for Instagram followers, fitness studios hire celebrity DJs to help them stand out from the crowd and gyms spend more time worrying about their lighting packages and sound systems than their training, making exercise more and more about the experience rather than the outcome doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Hell, even CrossFit, with it's controversial combination of beloved training modalities presented in a way that most science-based trainers despised, now looks like a solid option to even the most vocal haters compared to what passes for training these days. Yet, even CrossFit seems to be declining in popularity. What this all means for the actual, evidence-based, results-driven facility or one-on-one trainer that prioritizes getting clients healthier, moving better, increasing work capacity and improving body composition over the latest, trendy BS, I'm not sure. One of my trainers recently compared me to the Christian Bale character in the movie "The Big Short". In that movie, Bale's character - a hedge fund manager - predicts the decline of the mortgage market way before everyone else. And he starts betting his client's money that way while the mortgage market is still on the rise. Everyone doubts him. Everyone is pissed. Everyone wants their money back. Bale sees his investment pool dwindle - but he holds steady. He just knows that it just doesn't make sense. That it can't last. Apparently, that's me. I'm the fitness version of Christian Bale. I'm betting that at some point the general population will see through the strobe lights and disco balls and realize that this doesn't make sense. That it shouldn't last. And maybe you're Christian Bale, too. Maybe you're still prescribing to tried-and-true methods over worrying about social media hearts and in-home viewership. Like Bale, we know if we hold on long enough that the pendulum has to swing back around to a way that actually makes sense. I believe that's the way it's going to go. But, for now, be prepared to do your burpees while listening to big beats in the mist of the fog machine.
