We are finally collectively talking about our country’s history of race-based violence and oppression again Black Americans and communities of color. At AdmitSee, we are also talking about equality as it relates to accessspecifically, access to education. People often look to education access as a way to redress systemic racism. It definitely can be. Education is one of the major drivers of socioeconomic mobility.... However, we also need to talk about how educational access is not enough. Not without also discussing the interwoven social and political structures that can block a person’s path to equal access to education. From affordable healthcare and equal housing to public school funding and legislative and judicial representation, access isn’t created equal. In order to truly provide quality education for our students and maximize their engagement in the classroom, we need to create social structures and systems of support outside of the classroom for each and every student. This includes adequate nutrition, health services, and a safe place to sleep each night. Today, we acknowledge that the work we do increasing access to higher education is not enough without also engaging in change across multiple sectors in which our communities of color are still struggling for equal access. As part of our commitment to this effort, we’re donating 50% of our company proceeds from the month of June to NAACP Empowerment Programs (https://secure.actblue.com/donate/naacp-ep-2020) and to the ACLU (https://action.aclu.org/give/now). Internally, we’re increasing diversity within our database of students and reaching out to work with organizations that are focusing on early education intervention and retention methods for at-risk/at-promise youth. Black lives matter. Access matters. We have work to do. Read our full blog post here: https://www.admitsee.com//education-access-and-systemic-ra We've included ways you can donate (with or without money) to the cause, be a better ally, and stay informed about the #blacklivesmatter movement and other efforts to safeguard our civil liberties during this critical time in our country's history.
