Holiday hours: the last day we will be open for sandwiches is tomorrow, Monday 21st. Pre-order pickups will happen 10-3 Wednesday, December 23rd. We will have some extra goodies for sale, but no cafe service (keeping it simple!) This will be the last day for merch pickup as well. We will be closed from December 24th to January 1st, and back to cafe service on Saturday, January 2nd.... We will be delivering to both Lexington Co-op stores through Wednesday the 23rd if you need to stock up! Thank you for carrying us through this year, which has not exactly been ideal for running any kind of food/drink operation. We are so lucky to end the year in good health, thankful for your support as we continue to try and operate safely, and excited to face whatever 2021 brings together.

Just a quick housekeeping note on our menu prices: we now include tax in all of our prices - and we have also raised prices for some items (less than a dollar more, with the exception of giant pretzels, with the average increase being ~30 cents) to account for increasing costs and anticipate raising staff wages slightly. We're back... with online ordering! We missed you too. Order ahead and schedule contact-free pickup right here: https://breadhive-worker-cooperative.square.site/ Since it'll be a minute before our small cafe can be safely packed full of happy people eating food, we've had to reconfigure ourselves into a takeout/contactless pickup operation. We'll be starting small with a limited menu and only four days of pickup, to work out all the (inevitable) kinks in the system. You'll be... able to order sandwiches, cookies, bread, bagels, pantry items, merch and more... and pick it up starting this Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday! Plus the two magic words: BREAD CLUB. Our long-ferment bread is mixed & shaped a day ahead, so orders have to be placed in advance and you'll schedule a pick-up day and time when ordering. (We tried to make this as simple as possible, but the way we track inventory made it a little more convoluted than we'd prefer.) And since we're working with a tighter schedule, at least for now we will be limiting the variety of the things we bake... which is a gentle way of saying that pretzels aren't back yet. We'll be restarting our wholesale operation as well - so you'll be able to find our stuff at stores including Lexington Co-op again. And Elmwood Village Farmers Market is back June 6! OK so since last year we'd been planning on shutting down for a few days this spring to install our ~brand new walk-in cooler~ in the wholesale bakery but who would have thought we'd be closing up shop for a while anyway because of a global pandemic? (That's right, none of us thought that) Anyhow, behold our new commercial-grade refrigeration! Replacing a homemade walk-in cooler built out of sticks and gumption, it's a bigger & better unit for bigger & better baking. And we've been taking the opportunity to spruce the place up a little bit too... nothing like fresh paint. Which means yes, we'll be back soon. Watch this space for a date & details!

There's so much we don't know: how long is this going to take? what are the safest ways to operate? what kind of aid will workers & our business be able to access? We've been baking wholesale-only for about a month and while in some aspects it's been fine (we're bringing in money, our baked goods are making people happy, work... is helping keep our minds off of everything) in others it's still been overwhelming (we're personally feeling financially, physically & mentally stressed; we went into this without a long term plan) While this wasn't an easy call, and after a thoughtful discussion with lots of passion on both sides, we decided to pause production in order to regroup and come back stronger with an actual plan. We're not sure how long this will take because there are things we want to accomplish while shut down... including just resting. But watch this space and we'll announce our next moves when we're ready! And need your bread delivered? FreshFix will bring a loaf to your door along with other local goodies. Independent retailers like these are crucial parts of our local food ecosystem, so consider shopping small during this crisis if you can so they'll still be there for us when we're able to go about our usual lives again! We opened almost 6 years ago as a wholesale-only bakery and here we are again. Life is very strange. Thanks for your support in this weird time and we'll keep you posted.

Dear Buffalo, In order to keep our staff and community safe, after much reflection we have decided to close our cafe & retail operations until further notice. We have every hope to return stronger than ever when this health crisis is over, and look forward to that day! We will continue to produce and wholesale bread, bagels, pretzels and granola for our commercial partners as long as feasible - meaning you'll be able to find our products at Lexington Co-op, Farmers & Artisans... and Guercio & Sons. We will keep you posted on any changes to our operations as they happen. We are a worker-owned cooperative, so our workforce is our first priority. This crisis means that we've temporarily laid off our employees. We're lucky BreadHive is in a financial position to offer our employees bonuses to replace half of the next month's expected wages, and have offered to help them navigate the process of accessing unemployment. Our worker-owners will be working part time and taking a pay cut. We hope you'll join us in asking your elected officials for emergency funding initiatives to aid & compensate the food industry and other workers whose hours have been cut or eliminated, since not all small businesses will be able to do the same. Way back in December 2016 we decided to dedicate 5% of our cafe's sales of bread, bagels, pretzels & granola to a different cause or organization chosen by our worker-owners every month. To start the year off, we selected the long admired Massachusetts Avenue Project. MAP is an inclusive, diverse and community driven project focused on the development of local food systems, economic opportunities and the empowerment of youth. Over the past few years, we have discovered so ma...ny amazing organizations. From those focused on assisting asylum seekers to criminal justice reform, supporting the election of women to public office to assisting community members rebuilding after a devastating loss.
