Welcome to Jay's Kitchen! Join me and Owen, my almost five year old nephew, as we make chocolate cake! This program is both for kids to learn kitchen skills, as well as adults to get ideas for including kids in the kitchen! We cover some important things like handwashing, reading recipes, and measuring ingredients! Try making it at home with this recipe:... INGREDIENTS 2.25 Cups AP Flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 0.75 Cups cocoa powder 0.5 teaspoons salt 0.5 Cups vegetable oil 1 Cup brown sugar 1 Cup granulated sugar 3 large eggs 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 Cup buttermilk 0.5 Cups sour cream 1 Cup boiling water METHOD: Preheat the oven to 350. Butter and flour two 9 inch cake pans Combine the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, cocoa powder, salt. Combine the wet ingredients: oil, brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla, buttermilk, and sour cream. Combine the two mixures. Stir in the boiling water. Divide the batter into the two pans, bake for 35 minutes or so. Check to see if it's done by inserting a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, it's ready! Let cool 10-15 minutes. Frost as desired.

Tonight: Join Center for Brooklyn History & BPL Presents for CBH Talks: White Purity, Black Sexuality, and Their Roles in America’s History of Racism. In her new book, White Fright: The Sexual Panic at the Heart of America’s Racist History, historian Jane Dailey places white fear of Black sexuality and interracial sex at the center of America’s history of racism. Dailey brings into sharp relief how white focus on safeguarding purity fueled centuries of brutality and structur...al racism. Historian Nell Painter looks at the nineteenth and twentieth century south through an intersecting lens. Her book, Southern History Across the Color Line, brings to the surface the many ways in which the lives of southern Blacks and whites were thoroughly entangled. Join these two thinkers as they reflect on the white American psyche, the messy tangles between races in the south, and the through line that brings us from Emmett Till, to Loving v. Virginia, to the racism that continues today. See more
