BGR partners with Oxfam America in supporting its project Livelihood and Climate Smart Agriculture in Zombo District of Uganda. Small-scale agricultural production in this rural West Nile sub-region supports over 90 % of the population. Most small-scale farming is done by women who rely on agricultural production to feed their families and earn income by selling crops at the market. Land degradation, poor soil health, and high dependence on rain-fed agriculture have increas...ed the vulnerability of rural households to food insecurity and poverty. Ineffective agronomic practices result in soil erosion and loss of land fertility over time. The onset, duration, and intensity of rainfall vary considerably from year to year. The increased frequency of erratic weather patterns, including drought and flooding, has negatively impacted the economy and livelihoods. The project aims to increase the food security and income of 200 rural smallholder farmers through the Climate Resilient Agro-Ecological Model (CRAEM). CRAEM works with and strengthens community leadership structures and empowers communities to build household and agricultural resilience to shocks, mitigate the impact of climate change, and sustainably increase agricultural production. Oxfam also empowers women with information on their land & seed rights so that they can push for the formulation and implementation of gender-sensitive policies that enable them access to and control over economic resources. BGR grant helps provide seeds, tools, and cost of training, benefiting directly and indirectly around 1200 smallholder farmers- primarily women- and their families. The number of Americans in poverty has grown by between 6 million and 8 million people since May, with Black people and children most severely affected. As the pandemic continues to exacerbate the hunger crisis in the U.S. and globally, Buddhist Global Relief is contributing 10 percent of donations from this fall's Buddhist Action to Feed the Hungry regional fundraisers to support food banks and other community organizations in the U.S. To learn more and to contribute to this fundraising season, please join us here: http://bit.ly/BuddhistAction2020 This article dives into two studies examining how the pandemic is contributing to poverty in the U.S.: https://www.nytimes.com//10/20/nyregion/nyc-food-banks.html

Every day, 690 million people worldwide experience the suffering of hunger, and the World Food Programme estimates that 150 million additional people will experience hunger in the coming year due to the impacts of the pandemic. Two-thirds of these people live in rural areas. A new article in Nature identifies a shortage of research studies about how best to support vulnerable smallholder farmers. This "research gap" results from funding models that prioritize agribusiness in...terests or seek to develop "globally relevant" solutions rather than community-based, farmer-centered strategies to meet the particular needs of smallholders and farm laborers in a given community. As part of our work to relieve the suffering of chronic hunger and poverty worldwide, Buddhist Global Relief's projects provide opportunities and support for smallholder farmers to build skills, learn new technologies, and connect with others in their communities to share knowledge and resources. Emphasizing food security, climate resilience, and increased income for farmers, our projects are partnerships with the community members they support. We at BGR were delighted to learn today that the World Food Programme has been selected to receive the Nobel Peace Prize this year. We send our congratulations to all the team members of both the UN agency and World Food Program USA for this honor. For all that they do to relieve the suffering of people around the world struggling with hunger and malnutrition, they are utterly worthy of this prize.

Dear Friends, I am writing to you to invite you to join Buddhist Global Relief in its efforts to address the crushing problem of chronic hunger and malnutrition... that afflicts so many people in today’s world. At present BGR sponsors over forty projects spanning four areas: direct food aid, education for poor girls and young women, right livelihood opportunities for poor women, and ecologically sustainable agriculture. The countries where the projects take place range from far-flung Mongolia, through southern Asia and Africa, to pockets of poverty right here in the United States. This year, the pandemic prevents us from holding our usual walks. In place of the walks, we have launched a new initiative, called Buddhist Action to Feed the Hungrya network of online events around the country to mobilize American Buddhists and friends of Buddhism everywhere to join us in taking compassionate action to combat chronic hunger and malnutrition. The main online event will be held on October 24th, from 1 to 3 pm EDT, featuring talks by distinguished speakers including Jack Kornfield. Learn more about the event through the link below. I thank you in advance for taking action with us to relieve the suffering of thousands of people in need in the U.S. and around the world! With blessings, Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi

By Patricia Brick A BGR project with LICADHO (the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights) provides critical aid to incarcerated pregnant women and new mothers and their children. The Cambodian prison system is plagued by overcrowding, squalid conditions, and widespread corruption. Detainees’ rights are often neglected, and Cambodian prisons do not provide detainees with essentials, such as nutritious meals, clean drinking water, quality medical care and sanitary living conditions. "One-third of my country was underwater last month," writes Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister of Bangladesh. "The heaviest rains in almost a decade began and have still not abated. More than 1.5 million Bangladeshis are displaced; tens of thousands of hectares of paddy fields have been washed away. Millions of my compatriots will need food aid this year. ... "But this is not a cry for help; it is a warning. For while other countries may be less exposed to the climate crisis, ...they will not be able to escape its destructive force for long. Countries more fortunate than mine should take a long, hard look at what we are battling. Recent research suggests rising sea levels will force hundreds of millions of people to abandon low-lying coastal cities worldwide by mid-century. Will the global community act in time to avert this catastrophe?" Buddhist Global Relief supports sustainable agriculture projects that relieve hunger among the world's most vulnerable people while promoting organic cultivation methods, water conservation, and flood- and drought-resilient crops and methods. During this Buddhist Action to Feed the Hungry season, please consider supporting BGR's work with a donation.
