The Sisters of St. Joseph are profoundly saddened witnessing all of the horrific events and violence in our Capitol. We are grateful for our members of Congress who bravely continued the vital work outlined in our Constitution. The Sisters invite and welcome all to join our prayers for peace as we try to heal our deeply divided nation. We stand united with the world in praying for peace, reconciliation, and respect for our democracy. God bless,... The Leadership Team of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Buffalo

#FlashbackFriday to Mother Mary Harold Brown was the last person to hold the title of Reverend Mother of the Sisters of St. Joseph at Buffalo from 1963-1969. Following her retirement, the Sisters of St. Joseph started electing Presidents. Edna Brown was born in Buffalo, NY, in 1894. She was received into the Sisters of St. Joseph on April 1, 1918, and professed her final vows on April 7, 1923. She received a B.S. in Education from Mt. St. Joseph's Teacher's College in 1938. I...n the 1930s, she served as Principal at St. John the Baptist School, Java Center NY, Christ the King School in Amherst NY, and St. Vincent de Paul School and St. Joseph's School in Buffalo, NY. She accepted a position as the School Inspector for the Sisters of St. Joseph from 1940 until 1947. She later held positions as the Superintendent of Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Lackawanna, NY, and as the Assistant to Mother Hubert Pollard at the Mt. St. Joseph Motherhouse. After Mother Harold was elected to her position as head of the Congregation in 1963, she helped oversee a major capital fundraising campaign to build the new Motherhouse in Clarence, NY. She ensured the move from Buffalo to Clarence was successful. In 1970, the construction of the new Clarence residence was complete. She was a friendly and reassuring figure in the Congregation during a time of significant change. Although she retired from her position as Reverend Mother in 1969, she continued to assist with administrative duties in the Clarence Residence. She died on November 16, 1981. See more

#FlashbackFriday Mother Mary Anne Burke held the longest position as Reverend Mother for the Buffalo SSJ, from 1869 until 1913. She was appointed by the Buffalo diocese to fill Mother Anastasia Donovan's vacancy as the Reverend Mother in 1869. Born in Ireland in 1842, she grew up in Buffalo, where she was received into the Sisters of St. Joseph on October 13, 1861, at the Immaculate Conception Church at 21 years of age. Bishop Timon sent her to receive special training at the... Philadelphia School for the Deaf (known as the Mt. Airy Institute). She became the Principal of St. Mary's School for the Deaf in Buffalo in 1863. She would hold this position until her death on December 9, 1927. This distinction also makes her the Principal at St. Mary's School for the Deaf with the most extended term. Widely respected, Mother Mary Anne was a pioneer in the field of deaf education. She was also deeply beloved by the members of her Congregation and significantly helped expand the Sisters of St. Joseph's presence in Western New York. See more

#FlashbackFriday to St. Vincent de Paul The Sisters were at St. Vincent de Paul School from 1865 until it closed in 1975. Located in Cold Springs (the area near Jefferson Ave and Canisius College in Buffalo), the Sisters moved their novitiate from its location on Edward Street to the new site at St. Vincent de Paul School in 1865. It was called the Villa, and Sister Mary Rose Hynes (Novitiate Director) ran it. Sister Joseph Teresa Niedhofer and Sister Mary John Desmond assi...sted Sister Mary Rose with the novitiate while serving as the first teachers of St. Vincent de Paul School. In the back of the school was a ten-acre orchard that the Sisters helped run. The Sisters decided to remove the novitiate back to Edward Street within a few years but continued to teach at the school. One of the main reasons they left was traffic was routed through the Villa area, so it wasn't a quiet space anymore. They moved into a little cottage at the back of the property to use as their convent. The Jesuits bought the novitiate house, and later torn down in 1911 for the construction of Canisius College. Thank you, Jessica , our in-house archivist, for providing the historical information! #buffalossj
