LADY RAMS NIP EAGLES The South Kortright Lady Rams survived a scare at home last night against Downsville-Roscoe when a fourth-quarter rally by the Lady Eagles came up short and the Rams held on for a 36-30 win to stay unbeaten in the Delaware League. With the mercury hovering around six degrees outside at game time, the two teams settled into a physical defensive battle. The Lady Rams struggled to get the ball underneath against the Eagles’ zone defense, where they usually... feast, and their perimeter shooting was nearly as cold as the outside temperature. But it was even worse for the Eagles. The Rams’ defense held the Eagles to just a pair of two-point field goals in the first three quarters while sending them to the free throw line six times where Downsville made eight of 12 throws. At the end of three periods the score stood at 26-12 with the Rams looking like they would run out the fourth quarter and hang on to their lowest-scoring win of the season. That’s when the trouble started. Mckenzy Brown hit a pair of threes, Olivia Brunner heated up and hit for eight of her game-high 17 points and with 4:45 left to play, the Rams’ lead had been cut to two, 28-26. But seconds later, Eagle Kailee Young drew her fifth foul, left the game and the Downsville rally lost its steam. Brown hit her second three of the quarter at the 3:33 mark to cut the Rams’ lead to one, 30-29, but from then on, the Eagles made only one foul shot while the Rams added six to win, 36-30. The Rams spread their scoring over seven players with only Azalyn Hillis-Brunson reaching double figures with 11. Kassidy Wright and Lauryn Schmid had six each while Sonia Reeves had five. Olivia Brunner lead the Eagles with 17 followed by Brown with a pair of threes for six. The Eagles were 10 of 15 from the charity stripe while the Rams hit 11 of 23 tries. EAGLES TOP DEVILS A flat second half in the opening round of the Downsville Holiday Tournament cost the Margaretville Blue Devils at shot at the title as they dropped a 55-42 decision to the Deposit Hancock (DH) Eagles this afternoon. The Devils and the Eagles battled evenly in the first half with the Eagles taking a two-point lead at the end of the first period. Caleb Walker lit it up for DH with nine of his team’s 15 points. Ivan Herrera hit a pair of threes for the Devil...s and Connor Joedicke hit for four as the Devils put up 13 in the quarter to trail by just two. The Devils picked up the pace in the second period as the put up 12 points while holding the Eagles to eight and they took a 25-23 lead into the locker room at the half. But the Devils came out flat in the second half and the game quickly got away from them. As Margaretville coach John Bernhardt would say after it was over, We payed terribly in the second half, we were just flat. The Eagles had their best offensive quarter when they put up 20 in the third quarter to erase the Devils’ two-point half-time lead and race out to a 43-34 edge at the end of three. The Devils continued to struggle offensively in the fourth, scored only eight points in the final frame, and lost 55-24. Billy Miller led the Devils with 15points followed by Trevor Ferraro with seven and Ivan Herrera with six. Mike Gavette and Connor Joedicke had four each and Corey Shultis pitched in a deuce. Mike Gavette had a nice effort on the boards for the Devils. The Devils couldn’t stop DH’s Caleb Walker and he hit for 24. The Eagles were three for seven from the line while the Devils went five for seven. See more

LADY ROCKETS FALL The Hunter-Tannersville Lady Wildcats had a little too much of everything tonight as they bested the Lady Rockets in Roxbury, 50-26. The Wildcats took 30 foul shots to the Rockets 10, their height advantage contributed to a big edge in rebounds and they won the turnover war by a large margin. The two teams were tied at the end of the first quarter. Erin Garza hit a pair of layups and Destiny Proctor had a field goal to match four foul shots and a field goa...l by Hunter. It looked like Hunter was going to run away with the second period but six unanswered points by the Rockets just before the half sent the two teams to the locker room with Hunter up by two at 16-14. Turnovers by the Rockets and a huge edge in rebounds to Hunter saw the Wildcats double up Roxbury in the third frame and take a 34-23 lead into the final frame. The Wildcats ran away with the final frame, 16-3, as the Rockets struggled against Hunter’s press and the Wildcats went six for 10 from the line. Erin Garza led the Rockets with seven points followed by Destiny Parker with five. The Wildcats had three players in double figures with Jayden Lewis and Peyton Legg with 14 each followed by Sasha Gazoorian with a dozen. Accident closes Rt. 30 Wednesday New York State Rt. 30 in Grand Gorge was closed for more than two hours yesterday, Wednesday, Dec. 18 after a car ran into a Town of Roxbury snowplow causing major damage to both vehicles. The accident occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. when Roxbury resident John Jack Hall was traveling north on Rt. 30 in the vicinity of Rick’s Tire Service before the intersection of Rt. 30 with Rt. 23. According to Constable Steve Williamson, Hall lost co...ntrol of his 2018 Subaru and hit a guard rail on the passenger side of the car. The hit on the guard rail made his vehicle spin out and bounce off into the opposite lane. Earl Krom of Grand Gorge was traveling south on Rt. 30 in a Town of Roxbury snow plow truck and his vehicle was struck by the Hall Subaru with such force that it tore the saddle fuel tank off the truck and spun the truck around 180 degrees in the roadway. Hall’s airbag deployed and he complained of some chest pain but according to Williamson, was checked out and released at the scene. Krom complained of shoulder pain and was taken by his wife to Albany Medical Center. Hall was given a summons, returnable in Roxbury Town Court, for unsafe speed. The Grand Gorge Fire Department, Grand Gorge Ambulance and the Roxbury Fire Department all responded in addition to Williamson. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. On Thursday, Town Supervisor Tom Hynes told the News the vehicle hit will be out of commission for quite a while. It was a big truck so it’s going to slow us up a bit, said Hynes. But he said the town has backup vehicles and he expects the town highway crew will still be able to keep up with plowing and sanding needs while the truck is out of service. #CBreakingNews #RoxburyAccident

RAMS WIN AT HOME A third of a way through their 2019 ’20 basketball season, the South Kortright Rams finally came home. After six games on the road, during which they posted a 4-2 record, the Rams hosted Charlotte Valley Monday night and overwhelmed the Wildcats, 63-22. The Rams opened their season in Middleburgh on November 26 where they won, 72-58. Next, on December 3, they traveled to Unadilla Valley and came home 76-43 winners. Back on the road on December 5, they dow...ned Edmeston, 66-45. The Rams them traveled to Hunter and ran their record to 4-0 by beating the Wildcats, 73-50. The Rams then stepped up in class, way up in class, when they played in the DWI Tournament in Binghamton last weekend. On Friday they were beaten by Class A New Paltz, 68-41, before talking on Class B Norwich on Saturday in the consolation round. The Rams were in the Norwich game to the end before a flat final quarter doomed an otherwise brilliant outing and they fell, 62-56. Although they lost both games, the Class D Rams came home with their heads high, having held their own against two much larger schools on the road. The contest was decided quickly Monday against Charlotte Valley. The Rams scored early and often, racing out to a 16-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 34-9 lead at the half. The stingy Rams’ defense held the Wildcats to just 13 points in the second half while they poured in 29 of their own on the way to their 63-22 win. Ram head coach Aaron Kaufman substituted liberally beginning early in the third period. The Rams spread their scoring out with three players in double figures. Hunter Collins lead all scorers with 15 followed by Chris Champlin with 11, and Stanley Andersen and Seth Ashline with 10 each. Jordan Wamsley led the Wildcats with six. The Rams were 14 of 21 from the line while the Wildcats were eight for 17. The Rams have only four more home games on their schedule before the first round of league playoffs begin on February 11. Construction of the Rams’ new gym two winters ago put the Rams on the road for the entire season and their home-game schedule is still being affected by not having a home game or a gym in which to play in that year. The Rams will host the Margaretville Blue Devils tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 18 with the JV game beginning at 5:30. Photos by Dick Sanford See more

RAMS UPSET, DEVILS SHUT OUT It was a bad afternoon for Delaware League soccer teams in the semi-final round of the Section IV soccer tournament as first, the #2 seeded South Kortright Rams were upset in overtime, 2-1, by the #3 seed Cherry Valley-Springfield Patriots and then second, the #5 seeded Margaretville Blue Devils were shutout by the #1 seeded Marathon Olympians. Both games were played on the Hall of Fame Fields at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta. The... Rams got the action going first at 3 p.m. and dominated the Patriots in the early going but couldn’t find the net. The Rams had several chances off set plays and plays from the field but steady goal keeping by the Patriots’ Owen Johnson kept the game scoreless. The game settled into a defensive contest and the first half ended scoreless. The second half was more of the same until the final minutes when the Patriots Andrew Oram picked up the ball, drove to the goal and fired a shot past SK keeper Brandon Grommeck with just 8:51 left to play. The Rams pressured the Patriots goal as the clock wound down and then, with just 44 seconds left, Eoin Byrne, off a pass from Quinlan Davis, found the net for the Rams and tied the game as regulation time ran out. The two teams left the field and prepared to play two 15-minute sudden-victory overtime periods but it took just seconds for the game to end. In what was almost a mirror of his first goal, Andrew Oram took control of a ball and, with just 32 seconds gone in overtime, put a shot by Grommeck to win the game for the Patriots, 2-1. Kicking off at 3:30, the #5 seeded Margaretville Blue Devils knew they had their work cut out for them as they took on the #1 seeded Marathon Olympians. The two teams battled in the midfield until the 17:39 mark of the first period when Marathon’s Cameron Nielson settled a ball and fired a bullet past Margaretville keeper Billy Miller to put the Olympians up 1-0. And that’s how it would end. Marathon was as good as advertised but the Blue Devils held their own as the two teams battled. Margaretville keeper Billy Miller made 13 saves and his work kept the Devils in the game. But a ferocious defensive effort by Marathon kept the Devils off the board and the game in Marathon’s end of the field for much of the day. Marathon and Cherry Valley-Springfield will return to Oneonta on Saturday for the 2019 Section V soccer championship finals. The game time has yet to be announced. Photos by Dick Sanford See more

BLUE DEVILS ADVANCE The Margaretville Blue Devils put on a slick first-half passing clinic this afternoon in Laurens and it earned them a 3-0 win over the Leopards and a trip to the semi-final round of the Section IV soccer tournament this coming Wednesday, Oct. 30 in Oneonta. The Devils moved the ball beautifully early, passing the ball almost at will around the 18. Dividends came quickly when Ryan McVitty took a pass from Lenny Cordero and pounded a shot past Leopards’ ke...eper Chris Long with just two minutes and 27 seconds gone. The Devils struck again, this time at the 30:45 mark when Cordero took a corner kick from Mauricio Hernandez and made the score 2-0. Margaretville dominated play and continued to press the Laurens goal until late in the first half when the Leopards came to life and pressure of their own on the Margaretville goal. Momentum swung back to the Devils after keeper Billy Miller made a nifty save on a Laurens penalty kick at the 26:55 mark after a foul in the box was called away from the ball. The converted kick would have put the Leopards back in the game and down just one at 2-1 but Miller’s save seemed to take the wind out of the Leopards’ sails as they realized the gravity of a lost goal chance. Both teams settled down in the second half and good goal keeping at both ends of the field kept the half scoreless until Margaretville’s Willie Cano, who brought his own cheering section to the game, put on a show. Picking up the ball near midfield, Cano worked his way down the right side, made moves around three defenders and buried a highlight reel unassisted shot at the 7:44 mark to end the game’s scoring. The Devils took eight shots and earned seven corners. Margaretville keeper Billy Miller made eight safes in recording the shutout. The Devils were offside once. The Leopards took eight shots and earned four corners. Keeper Chris Long made five saves. Laurens was offside once. The game was physical and there were fouls aplenty. Margaretville was whistled 14 times and Laurens nine. Three yellow cards were issued in the second half. Margaretville’s Mauricio Hernandez was called for unsportsmanlike conduct at the 33:13 mark. Leopard Jerred Brodie drew a card for reckless play as did Anthony Provost for unsportsmanlike. Photos by Dick Sanford See more

LADY DEVILS ELIMINATED IN PK SHOOTOUT The Margaretville Lady Blue Devils were eliminated from the Section IV soccer tournament this afternoon when their game with Edmeston ended in a 3-3 tie. Edmeston moves on in the tournament by winning a dramatic penalty-kick shootout, 3-2. The penalty kick shootout came after the two teams played two 10-minute regular overtime periods and then two five-minute sudden death overtime periods. With darkness settling in, the two teams lined ...up on the west end of the Devils’ field to shoot the best of five PKs. Edmeston went first and missed. The Devils went next and made one to go up 1-0. Edmeston made its second attempt to tie but then the Devils missed their second and third shots and the score was knotted at one each after each team made three attempts. Each team scored on their fourth attempt and then Edmeston went up 3-2 on their fifth try. Margaretville’s final shot sailed over the crossbar and the game was over. Neither keeper made a save in the shootout. Edmeston put Margaretville in a hole early when they scored the game’s first two goals. Arissa Bolton put the Panthers on the board at the 26:24 mark and then Madison Bolton put Edmeston up by two at 12:17 mark. Alivia Cordero got the Devils back in the game unassisted at the 10:32 mark but then a handball in the box earned the Panthers a PK and Madison Bolton drove it home. As the first half ended it looked dark for the Devils but they came out in the second half and dug themselves out of the deep hole they dug in the first. Marisol Flores, assisted by Cordero, pulled the Devils to within one and then Olivia Balcom tied the game at the 5:46 mark. Kansas Shamro earned an assist on Balcom’s goal. The two teams battled through four overtimes with each having scoring opportunities. Edmeston nearly ended the game in the fourth OT when a shot at the open Margaretville net went wide. Margaretville had a shot that banged off the crossbar back onto the field. The overtimes ended scoreless setting up the penalty-kick dramatics. The Lady Blue Devils ended a fine season, going undefeated in Delaware League play and winning the Delaware League Championship. They were 9-0 in league play and 15-1-1 overall. See more

BLUE DEVIL DAY It was an excellent day for Margaretville soccer Saturday at the Delaware League Championships played at the Wright National Soccer Campus Hall of Fame Fields in Oneonta. The Blue Devil boys claimed a Delaware League co-championship by virtue of paying regular-season champion South Kortright to a scoreless tie and the girls shut out Roxbury, 1-0, and reign supreme as both the Delaware League regular season champions and Delaware League champions. The boys go...t the action going at 1:15 p.m. in a match that saw the 9-0 in league play and 15-0 overall Rams looking to keep their record blemish free while the Blue Devils were determined to avenge their only league loss, a 3-0 shutout, to South Kortright earlier in the season. The Rams had previously claimed the regular season championship by finishing their league season play with a perfect record. On a cool fall day under a brilliant sun, the two teams each had their chances but good keeper play at both ends of the field and stubborn defensive play kept both teams off the scoreboard. Much of the game was played in the midfield as neither team dominated play. In spite of the scoreless tie, the Rams earned an edge in the stats. South Kortright took nine shots and earned nine corners. The Blue Devils answered with eight shots but only one corner. Rams’ keeper Brandon Grommeck recorded six saves while Margaretville keeper Bill Miller was called on to make 11. The Margaretville Lady Blue Devils and the Roxbury Lady Rockets took the field at 3:15 p.m. and only three minutes and 26 seconds in, Margaretville’s Netalia Herrera, off an assist from Olivia Balcom, put the Lady Blue Devils on the board. And that was all the scoring they would need. Margaretville coach Toni Smith sent Herrera back to play defense and the Devils held on to win, 1-0. The Lady Rockets had their chances as they pressured the Margaretville goal several times just before the end of the first half when one shot with about four minutes left hit the right goal post and ricocheted the wrong way for the Rockets. The Blue Devils took six shots and earned two corners. The Rockets took nine shots and earned six corners. Margaretville keeper Shyana Balcom recorded six saves while Roxbury keeper Bryanna Meehan made two. The Lady Blue Devils finished their Delaware League play with a 14-1 overall record and were perfect in league play as the ran the table at 9-0. Their only loss was to Roxbury in the finals of the Stamford Mayor’s Cup back in September. The Lady Rockets finished their Delaware League season with a 13-2 record and were 8-1 in regular-season league play with their only league loss a 1-0 shutout by Margaretville. DEVILS SHUT OUT ROCKETS The Roxbury Lady Rockets’ soaring dreams of an undefeated season came crashing to earth this afternoon as the Rockets traveled to Margaretville for their final league game of the season and were shut out by the Devils, 1-0. Margaretville’s lone score came with just 5:24 left in the second half when Kansas Shamro found Roxbury keeper Briana Meehan out past the 18 and lofted a shot over her head for the unassisted game winner. The win avenged the only ...blemish on the Devils’ Delaware League record, a 5-1 loss to Roxbury back in September in the finals of the Stamford Mayor’s Cup. Both teams had been undefeated in Delaware League play with Roxbury sporting an 8-0-league record and 12-0 overall while the Devils were 8-0 in league play and 11-1 overall. Margaretville dominated play and time of possession in the first half as the Devils pressured the Rockets’ goal numerous times. The Rockets threatened late in the first half as a scrum in front of the goal was turned away by a defender. The Rockets picked up their game in the second half but excellent goalie work by Shyanna Balcom kept the Rockets off the board. The game featured good keeper work at both ends of the field. Margaretville took eight shots and earned six corners. The Rockets recorded seven shots and earned three corners. Balcom made four saves for the Devils while Meehan had seven for the Rockets. The two teams will face each other at least once more, and probably twice, the first on Saturday, Oct, 19 at the Hall of Fame field in Oneonta in the Delaware League crossover game for the Delaware League title, with a second meeting likely in sectional play. RAINY DAY WIN The Margaretville Blue Devils played their final home Delaware League game of the 2019 season this afternoon in front of a nice turnout of hardy fans in a driving rainstorm. It was pouring as the game opened and got worse as the afternoon went on. The conditions didn’t slow the Devils down much as they shut out the Windham Warriors, 8-0. Things started badly for the Warriors when they were the victims of an own goal that went off the leg of sweeper Brian VanVa...lin just 3 minutes and 14 seconds in. Willie Cano was given credit for the goal. After that, it went downhill fast for the over matched Warriors. The Devils scored five more times before the half ended as Michael Gavette scored twice, the first on a header off a corner kick, Ivan Herrera scored off an assist by Kevin Flores, Cano scored again unassisted and Elvin Paredes closed out the first half scoring assisted by Cano. It began to rain cats and dogs as the second half started but the Devils went right back to work. Maurico Hernandez, assisted by Darwin Espino, scored at the 34:48 mark and then Herrera picked up his second goal off an assist by Cano. At about the 20-minute mark, referees John Laing and Gary Rockefeller had seen enough. Field conditions continued to get worse, especially in front of both goals, and, with the contest long-since decided, they called the game. The Devils will play their last two league games on the road. On Tuesday, Oct. 8 they will be in Jefferson and then on Thursday, Oct. 8 they will finish the season in Roxbury. ROCKETS TOP JAYHAWKS The Roxbury Rockets came home from Jefferson this afternoon with a win in their pockets but there was nothing easy about it. Dominated in time of possession by the Jayhawks, the Rockets took advantage of their limited scoring chances to post a 3-2 win. The victory avenged the Jayhawks’ 2-1 overtime win over the Rockets in the opening round of the Stamford Mayor’s Cup on September 3. The Rockets struck first, just 30 seconds into the game. John Cole work...ed the ball up the right side and found Ian Walker open on the 18. Walker buried a shot into the right corner of the goal to put the Rockets on top by one. The Jayhawks then dominated play for most of the rest of the half but couldn’t put good pressure on the Rockets’ goal. A corner kick, at the 7:39 mark, put the Rockets up by two. Zack Key crossed the ball into the box, Hunter Peters drove it home and the half ended with the Rockets on top, 2-0. Jefferson’s pressure on the Rockets’ goal paid dividends when Evan Strobe found the net unassisted at the 30:45 mark to get the Jayhawks in the game. Just two minutes later, Lucas Pochily scored unassisted to knot the score at 2-2. With just under eight minutes to play, the Rockets worked the ball into their end of the field where a Jefferson defender was called for a foul, setting up a direct kick. Ian Walker took the shot from about 30 yards and buried the ball into the right corner of the net at the 6:05 mark to put the Rockets up by one at 3-2. Roxbury dropped back to play defense but the drama wasn’t over. The Rockets were called for a foul and the Jayhawks were awarded a direct kick from the right side with 30 seconds to play. The try went high and over the bar and Roxbury was able to run out the remaining seconds for the win. The Jayhawks were credited with 12 shots and earned two corners. Jefferson keeper Kevin Lindquist was credited with three saves. The Rockets took seven shots and earned three corners. Roxbury keeper Trent Faulkner-Squires was credited with four saves. The Rockets were called for 14 fouls, Jefferson three. The Rockets’ Hunter Poniors was issued a yellow card with 5:04 left in the game. Photos by Dick Sanford See more

Some of the most unusual photos I've ever taken. A bobcat, wading in the West Branch of the Delaware, which is odd by itself, seemed to be stalking a bald eagle that was sitting in a tree overhanging the river. The eagle, visible in the first of these images, took off when I stopped. The cat wasn't alone. Back on the bank were two others. My guess would be his/her mate and a kit. The cat was clearly looking at the eagle when I first saw it. - Dick Sanford

CLOSE CALL The Margaretville Lady Blue Devils, clinging to a one-goal lead in the final minutes of their game at home against Hunter this afternoon, withstood a flurry last minute shots, including one that went off the right post, to earn a 3-2 non-league win. In the end, the difference was an own goal by Hunter at the 21:04 mark of the first period. Netalia Herrera got the scoring going for the Devils when she took a cross from Marisol Flores and beat Hunter keeper Rosalie... Randolph. Hunter’s own goal, off a scrum in front, made it 2-0 before Hunter’s Justin Iannelli, assisted by Sasha Gazzorian, got the Wildcats within one.
