Hi! This is Carolina (@saya_y_manto) again. Today, I’d like to show you a work in the Construction Site section of the Fall Reading Room. This exhibition focuses on the process of immigrating and the challenges faced by immigrants settling in a new place. Pablo Helguera @helguerapablo, A Dictionary of Foreign Time (FA.SA5.0755). Produced in collaboration with the Center for Book Arts, this dictionary... provides definitions of the different aspects of the daily life of immigrants. On its surface, the artist combines the words of LP Hartley and Paul Valery to stress the blurriness of time and place in the immigrant’s experience: the past is a foreign country...the future is not what it used to be. Hi! This is Carolina (@saya_y_manto) again. Today, I’d like to show you some of the objects at the Morcos/Key Makes/Reads section of the Fall Reading Room. This exhibition addresses the topic of design in a multicultural context. It presents certain features of design such as book design and fonts as devices that allow us to express cultural and personal identity. Saki Mafundikwa, African Alphabets: The Story of Writing in Africa (REF.CL.2175). This book documents a multipl...icity of African alphabets, highlighting their design value and rich history, which dates back to the precolonial era. As the author has mentioned, the words civilization and writing, to many, are synonymous with Westernization, however, this book celebrates the oftentimes forgotten history of writing in Africa. Alexander Nesbitt, Decorative Alphabets and Initials (REF.CL.1914). Focusing on European typefaces, this book compiles a multiplicity of alphabets and initials obtained from rare, out-of-print books. Divided into three sections, it explores the decorative aspects of manuscript initials, printed book initials, and Victorian letters and types.
