When we think about birth defects, we usually think about defects to the body such as cleft lip and clubbed foot. However, many infants are born with structural... abnormalities of the brain, without any observable abnormalities of the body. One group of such conditions includes structural abnormalities of the cerebellum (e.g., Dandy-Walker, Chiari malformation, hypoplasia/underdevelopment). Many individuals with cerebellar abnormalities experience problems with balance and motor functions, and some also have problems with cognitive and emotional functioning.
