The City of Amsterdam Honors, Jan Syper Jan (John) Syper was born on September 5th, 1916 in the city of Fall River Massachusetts. In November of 1942, at the age of 26, he enlisted in the Army to support our nation during WWII. Jan was a Staff Sargent (Squad Leader) in charge of a mortar squad of eight men. He served valiantly and heroically and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during battle and the Bronze Star for heroic activities while serving in Europe in... 1944. Jan never spoke about his military service, but his efforts most likely helped save the lives of numerous of his battalion friends. While he and his squad were surrounded on three sides by superior enemy forces and running out of ammunition, he took it upon himself to traverse through these heavily fortified positions several times in order to deliver vitally needed ammunition. The enemy fire was so intense, consisting of heavy artillery, mortar, flak and heavy machine gun fire it had stopped the progress of several friendly battalion vehicles and armored tanks. Upon his return, Jan married Helen Tumidajewicz became an auto body professional and helped raise three children, Cheryl, John and Dawn. Jan was a strong, friendly, compassionate person. https://www.amsterdamny.gov/amsterdam-heroes/jan-syper All other Military Heroes can be viewed at https://www.amsterdamny.gov/our-city/amsterdam-heroes
