The Temple of the Four Winds on the ground of Castle Howard, an echo of Andrea Palladio’s Villa La Rotunda that has been scaled down and fitted into its English surroundings by architect John Vanbrugh. Both, of course, are inheritors of the legacy of the Roman villa, a home set among gardens or the countryside, and a continuing inspiration for elegant living in nature. The ICAA invites you to join us on March 15th and 16th for The Design of the Villa and Garden: The Paradox ...of Paradise with David Gobel, Professor of Architectural History, Savannah College of Art and Design. The age-old impulse to build a villa is a fundamentally paradoxical one which, nevertheless, strikes at the heart of what it means to build and what it means to dwell on this earth. A villa, set, as it inevitably is, in a garden, is a home away from home. Why do we seek such a place? What ultimately, does the villa and its garden represent? How have architects and landscape architects addressed these over the centuries? This two-part lecture program will explore the villa and garden tradition from antiquity to the present. Bold colors, brown furniture, and Piranesi prints on the wall. In other words, a perfectly delightful interior, which could only be the lovely Bloomsbury flat of architectural and interior designer Ben Pentreath! We are honored to welcome Ben on Wednesday, March 10th as the speaker at the 20th Annual McKim Lecture, in partnership with the University Club and the the One West 54th Street Foundation, where he will deliver his talk Lessons from History, which will examine how ...crucial it is for a harmonious union between modernity and classicism. Ben’s buildings and rooms draw directly on the inspiration of the past, with an energy that is simultaneously traditional but contemporary at the same time. Above all, Ben enjoys designing places that work beautifully for the long term. Ben's aesthetic is inspired by tradition and a respect for carefully detailed, authentic materials and design, but combined with a love of contemporary culture, which means that life is never dull. Today we’re taking a look at the videos that are proving to be enormously popular on the ICAA’s YouTube channel, and we are delighted to see the continued interest in a wonderful lecture delivered by the incredible landscape designer, Arne Maynard, Formality & Informality. If you haven’t yet had a chance to watch this delightful exploration of Arne’s insights into the considerations he brings to the gardens he creates, and how he seeks to highlight formal and informal eleme...nts, we sincerely recommend it! (In this image, Blackland House in Wiltshire is given a treatment that elevates the stunning architecture of the house without encumbering it with excessive formality.) . Selections from Leon Battista Alberti’s Della architettura della pittura e della statua demonstrate his careful observation of scale, proportion, and perspective, and his mindfulness of the place of humans in the built environment. Alberti was well-attuned to the relationship between architecture and humans and to the ways in which architecture and buildings contribute to the urban fabric of a city. Join Peter Kohane, Senior Lecturer of Architecture at UNSW Sydney, for the AIA-credited video course Architecture and the City: The Work of Leon Battista Alberti, which will review Alberti’s principles, their relationship to the architecture of the Renaissance, and how they can be applied to architectural debates today. Attention emerging architects and landscape designers: the ICAA is currently accepting submissions for the Bunny Mellon Landscape Design Prize, which will be awarded to a project from an emerging landscape or architectural design professional whose work is inspired by classical or traditional design, holistically considers the symbiosis between outdoor environments and physical structures, and interweaves garden and architectural elements within their design. . We’re acceptin...g submissions until December 15. Follow the link in our profile to learn more! . Pictured here are fine examples of landscape design and architectural harmony, from gardener, horticulturist, author, and artist Gertrude Jekyll’s book Some English Gardens, published in 1904 (including some of her collaborative work with architect Edwin Lutyens, for which gardens and architecture were always intended to function as a unified whole). . This Prize is presented annually as part of the ICAA’s Bunny Mellon Landscape Curricula at the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. The ICAA is very grateful to the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation for its generous support of this program, along with the Curricula's Lead Co-Sponsor Edmund D. During London’s cooler months, a warm fire is sure to be eagerly welcomed by all. Entirely optional, however, is the eclectic collection of furnishings, art, and objects that reveal the owners’ keen eye and yen for collecting. The notes are carefully orchestrated by designer Markham Roberts, who has created a comfortable, idiosyncratic, and yet elegant room. On Thursday, November 5th Markham will join designer and ICAA Board Member Alexa Hampton for the 2nd Annual Mark Hampto...n Lecture. Alexa and Markham will discuss in depth their experiences working for Alexa's legendary father, and what that experience taught them about their own style, and points of view and methods of working. Most importantly, the two will share some amusing tales of what it was like working in its heyday at one of the greatest design firms in NY. How lucky for Palladio! Whenin the mid 16th centuryhe wanted to learn from history and devise a conjectural reconstruction of the Baths of Agrippa in Rome, enough of the structure remained that he could begin with observations and measurements taken in person. Today we have but a wall. Learning from observation, measurement, and drawing can be vital to the growth of any architect. History provides a wealth of material that the architect can draw upon to inform the design fo...r any new building. In the classical tradition, new buildings draw on a legacy of work, which in turn they enrich and transmit to successors. On November 18th, join the ICAA for How Architects Study Buildings: Measured Drawings from the Renaissance to Today. This online course will explore how architects from the Renaissance to the present day have studied buildings through the use of measured drawings, with a special focus on a number of important sketchbook and drawing collections that can act as a guide and inspiration for architects and designers today. Terrifying words for any student of architecture to hear: "How is architecture still a profession? LOL. Just copy the other buildings. Nobody cares." Thankfully there are dedicated emerging classicists who are dedicated to a future of beautiful, sensible, and humane architecture! In a recent episode of the ICAA’s original podcast, Classicism in Conversation, we were delighted to welcome a roundtable discussion with recent graduates of the University of Notre Dame School of ...Architecture. "Lessons from Architecture School" is not a textbook primer about design, but rather a lively conversation about the purpose of architects, the need for classical elements in contemporary designs, and what architects can do to improve the future of their discipline. The six classmates share laughs about the misconceptions they brought into their first year in the program, commiserate about sleepless nights in the studio, and discuss the essential lessons they absorbed as architecture students. Moderator Caroline Colella is joined by Victoria Cardozo, Patrick Dunleavy, Matthew Loumeau, Austin Proehl, and Alessandra Turi; all of whom are graduates of the Class of 2020. Just a small portion of the positively enormous Nymphenburg Palace (Schloss Nymphenburg) in Munich Germany. The Baroque palace, in its present form, must be credited to the many architects who have added wings, redesigned facades, and otherwise sought to please the parade of Bavarian Electors for whom it was their summer home, but the initial architect of the central pavilion was the Italian Agostino Barelli, who helped introduce the Baroque style to Bavaria. As it happens, t...he Nymphenburg Palace is also one of the locations used to bring life to a fictional hotel in one of the films chosen by award-winning designer Timothy Corrigan in What We’re Watching, the ICAA’s series of film recommendations for lovers of architecture and design. The May, a mixed-use building by Merrill, Pastor & Colgan Architects in Alys Beach, Florida, is thoughtfully designed to fit into its architectural context while simultaneously taking advantage of passive design elements that are not only functional, but are visually striking. The firs...t lecture in the series, The Architecture of Place: Florida, Atlanta and AI Ain with Scott Merrill of Merrill, Pastor & Colgan Architects will take place on October 19.
