Sunday’s Featured Album: Roger McGuinn (self titled vinyl) VG+/NM - $15 If you’re a fan of The Byrds...... James Roger McGuinn /mwn/ (born James Joseph McGuinn III; July 13, 1942)[1] is an American musician. He is best known for being the frontman of the Byrds. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his work with the Byrds. During 1963, just one year before he co-founded the Byrds, McGuinn worked as a studio musician in New York, recording with Judy Collins and Simon & Garfunkel. At the same time, he was hearing about The Beatles (whose first American tour would commence in February 1964), and wondering how Beatlemania might affect folk music. He gave rock style treatments to traditional folk tunes and thereby caught the attention of another folkie Beatle fan, Gene Clark, who joined forces with McGuinn in July 1964. Together they formed the beginning of what was to become the Byrds.[3] During his time with the Byrds, McGuinn developed two innovative and very influential styles of electric guitar playing. The first was "jingle-jangle" generating ringing arpeggios based on banjo finger picking styles he learned while at the Old Town School of Folk which was influential in the folk rock genre. The second style was a merging of saxophonist John Coltrane's free-jazz atonalities, which hinted at the droning of the sitar a style of playing, first heard on the Byrds' 1966 single "Eight Miles High", which was influential in psychedelic rock. While "tracking" the Byrds' first single, "Mr. Tambourine Man", at Columbia studios, McGuinn discovered an important component of his style. "The 'Ric' [12 string Rickenbacker guitar] by itself is kind of thuddy," he notes. "It doesn't ring. But if you add a compressor, you get that long sustain. After the break-up of the Byrds, McGuinn released several solo albums throughout the 1970s.

Saturday’s Featured Album: Graham Nash/David Crosby (self titled vinyl) VG+/NM - $15 If you’re a fan of Crosby, Stills, Nash, (& Young)...... Graham Nash David Crosby is the first album by the partnership of David Crosby and Graham Nash, released on Atlantic Records in 1972, catalog SD 7220. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, and a single taken from the album, "Immigration Man", peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 on June 17 and 24, 1972.[3] It was certified gold by the RIAA, and it was dedicated to Joni Mitchell, as "to Miss Mitchell". After the split of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the summer of 1970, all four members would release solo albums over the next 12 months. Neil Young and Stephen Stills would both pursue independent band projects through the early years of the decade, Young working with Crazy Horse and the Stray Gators, with Stills assembling Manassas. Both If I Could Only Remember My Name and Songs for Beginners respectively by Crosby and Nash fared well in the marketplace, and in the autumn of 1971 the duo embarked on a series of concerts together, unable or unwilling to include Stills and Young. The success of the tour led Crosby and Nash to take the new songs auditioned on the road into the recording studio. Sessions for this album featured backing from notable guests Dave Mason and members of The Grateful Dead Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. Most of the musical support came from The Section, a quartet of in-demand session musicians on the West Coast in the 1970s. Consisting of Craig Doerge, Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, and Russell Kunkel, they would appear on dozens of albums, notably those by James Taylor, Carole King, and Jackson Browne. They would also continue to work with Crosby & Nash for the remainder of the decade, both in the studio and on tour. The songs continued the qualities that marked the pair's work with the larger aggregate, with Nash writing tighter pop songs including the album's hit, and Crosby exploring mood pieces and introspection, all amidst the duo's usual vocal harmonies. The commercial success of this album equaled, if not surpassed a bit, that of the pair's two solo albums of the previous year, although it would not be until after the second break-up of CSNY following their 1974 summer tour that Crosby and Nash would sign an album contract as a unit with ABC Records. Following the release of this album, the duo toured in 1973 with a backing band including, at different times, David Lindley and future Eagles guitarist Don Felder.

Friday’s Featured Album: Patrick Simmons VG+/NM - $15 If you’re a fan of The Doobie Brothers...... Patrick Simmons (born October 19, 1948)[1] is an American musician best known as a founding member of the rock band The Doobie Brothers. Born in Aberdeen, Washington, he has been the only consistent member of the band throughout their tenure. Simmons wrote and sang many songs for the Doobie Brothers, including "South City Midnight Lady", "Dependin' On You", "Echoes of Love", and "Black Water," the group's first #1 record.[1] The Doobie Brothers initially disbanded in 1982, largely on account of Simmons' decision to leave the group, as he was its sole remaining original member. In 1983, Simmons released his first solo album, Arcade, on Elektra Records. It yielded his only top 40 hit, "So Wrong",[2] which peaked at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100. "So Wrong" was also a surprise hit on the US Dance/Disco Top 80 chart, peaking at #8.[3] The album was reissued on compact disc in Japan in the early 1990s and again in 2007, by the label Wounded Bird Records. Simmons also formed the band "Skin Suit" during this period.[4] In 1998, Simmons released a second solo album titled Take Me to the Highway.
