When MSW students enter their field internships, they are immediately challenged with the need to bridge professional and personal identities, manage crises, emergencies, and ethical dilemmas, and work with clients and colleagues experiencing structural racism and oppression. In this episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara sits down with Associate Professor of Professional Practice Yamile Martí and adjunct professor and 2016 alumna Anna Balakrishnan to talk about the rationale behind a new course they are piloting for first-year students. The course aims to provide tools they will needprofessionalism, self-awareness, ethics, and an anti-oppressive frameworkto handle the complex realities social workers face in their day-to-day interactions.

Black History Month shouldn’t be treated as though it is somehow separate from our collective American history, said President Barack Obama in a 2016 speech. In this episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara sits down with current MSW student and the first-year coordinator of the School’s Black Caucus Allana John-Charles to talk about what Black History Month means today, and what she hopes it will mean in future. They will discuss why it is just as important for white Americans to learn Black history, and how celebrating Black history all year long would contribute to the nation’s healing.
Join us TOMORROW at noon for a discussion with #CSSW MSW student Allana John-Charles, a first-year coordinator of the School's Black Caucus, on what #BlackHistoryMonth means today and what she hopes it will mean in the future. More info: https://bit.ly/3tyVL1v

For the last five years, #CSSW has recognized the second Monday in October as #IndigenousPeoplesDay. This year, it is particularly important that we celebrate the history and culture of Indigenous peoples, who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 (the topic of a University webinar tonight found here: https://bit.ly/36U7vCR). We encourage our community to spend some time today exploring the educational resources of the Lenape Center, an organization we partner with on a number of occasions including field placements, a forthcoming course in the Spring, and graduation (pictured here).
Congrats to the 9 #CSSW community members recognized at tonight's NASW NYC Chapter 2020 Leaders of the Profession Awards Gala!
