Inside the Gardenworks barn, Judy and Bridget are adding intriguing hints of the holiday season ahead. There are towels with fat turkeys and napkins with colorful harvest themes. You’ll smile at the new collection of local pottery from Roseanne Henning with country scenes and autumn colors. Then little by little, you’ll find red & green accentsfrom cardinals to Christmas cards and Advent Calendars. We’re all excited to start creating collections with little gnomes and friendly Santas. You’ll find great ornaments, ribbons and decorations for the new season!

Trees in the Black Creek Valley have been beautiful for weeks and the hills still have a golden glow with a bright red maple bursting into color here & there. Last week we appreciated 2 full days of rain and know the blueberries, raspberries and other perennial plants benefited. As much as fall seems like a winding down season, the farm has been humming with activity. A dedicated gleaning team came from Comfort Food Community in Greenwich on Thursday to harvest a van full of acorn & butternut squash to be shared with their clients. A neighbor farmer came to collect the remaining pumpkins in the field to feed his pigs!

KITCHEN THERAPY After a good workout in the garden, it’s fun to retreat to the kitchen to create a hearty & delicious fall dinner. It’s good to try a new recipe and this morning I looked at several from the New York Times Cooking newsletter and was tempted by this fall idea: https://cooking.nytimes.com//1021485-one-pan-orzo-with-spi with spinach & feta, It sounds delicious to me & celebrates healthful eating! Of course, we could talk about scrumptious apple crisp or a pum...pkin pie too! As we spend more time indoors, it’s good to try something new, enjoy the investment of time & hopefully find your culinary creation is delicious! Home cooking is great for the body & the soul! Rob and I are always talking about the amazing arts & agriculture of our area. Fall seems as if it is a perfect season to taste the apples from Borden’s Orchard, the maple syrup from Mapleland Farms, the honey from Russ Guard, all natural grass fed beef from Mack Brook Farm, the lettuce & spinach from Owl Wood Farm and Little Field Farm. Then we reflect on the art by our neighbors, Tom Kerr, Leah McCloskey, Carol Conklin and the local artisans, Al Wilson, Pam Furlon, John Steves, Barb Abraham, Martha Stark and local historical author Al Cormier. Visit to celebrate agriculture & art with us!

GARDEN CLEAN UP. Are you ready? It’s time to rip out all the faded petunias, geraniums, herbs & annuals that Jack Frost has ruined! You’ll get a real sense of accomplishment & it will look better after you remove all faded plants from container & garden areas. For perennials, now is the time to prune old flower heads and to cut tall perennials back to a height of 8 inches. Pull weeds and rake leaves to get your gardens ready for winter. You may want to add a little bark mulch, 2-3 inches over roots of perennials for a layer of winter protection. For extra color, we often mound pumpkins of all sizes & shapes in our planters for seasonal interest. Add a scarecrow too!

We still have soil on our boots & more outdoor chores to get the fields ready for winter. The harvest is in and Jose will soon be roto-tilling & sowing winter rye for a cover crop. As we reflect on the growing season, we’re proud of the pumpkins & squash (more than 50 varieties) harvest. We have lots and lots of squash for your fall dinners & Thanksgiving! We hope you’ll decorate with pumpkins more than ever! Pumpkins are now BUY 1, Get 1 FREE!

Fall Fare As the weather gets cooler, there are so many warm, hearty meals that taste good. We’re promoting butternut & acorn squash (we had an amazing harvest) as a vegetable, in a creamy soup or even as an entre’ stuffed with a savory dressing. Squash is so nutritious and it tastes GOOD! Ask for our recipes! Apples are another especially delicious fruit in fall. There is nothing better than a crisp apple with cheese, or a bubbling apple pie or maybe warm applesauce served... with pork. The flavor is incredible & they are from Borden’s Orchard in Easton! Potatoes rank as one of my favorite foods as we move into winter. I like them baked, creamed or mashed and find they are a true comfort food. They are freshly dug from Goose Island Farm in Argyle. All of these fall crops are grown right here in Washington County and demonstrate the bounty of our farms. See more
