Garth with our very first NYC gallery employee....Alice Hohenberg Federico! Alice was a student of Ken Ferguson way back when. Oh the memories....
Blast from the past...circa 1985. Me, Lennie Berkowitz (our Kansas City representative), the amazing Ken Ferguson and Wayne Kuwada, our Los Angeles Gallery Director.
Just got this fantastic photo from our former Associate Director Gretchen Adkins. It is a view of our back room at the 57th Street Gallery in 2001. Our back room was the most famous back room in New York for ceramic art. What can be seen is the infamous Viola Frey piece title Bricaleouse" from 1977, a self-portrait in underwear which was both intimidating and compelling. Also there is a David Gilhooly "Bread Frog" from 1980 on the pedestal in front, on the left is a large Law...son Oyekan with numerous holes punctured into it and on the right is a pair of sold Akio Takamori figures with "post-it's" on their head plus a Jean-Pierre Larocque "Horse" in front of them. Among the many works are Karen Karnes, Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, Tony Marsh, Junko Kitamura and even a paint bucket with a cardboard tray on top of it (which means this was taken after an installation, just before an opening). Love this photo, this is truly "behind the scenes" at the Garth Clark Gallery in it's hey-day! See more
An assemblage by Gwyn Hanssen Pigott who passed away last night at the age of 78.
We lost another great potter/ceramist/artist yesterday, our beloved Gwyn Hanssen Pigott (1935-2013). We had fantastic shows of her work over our 30 year gallery... life and she will be greatly missed. Taking wood-fire into a more sophisticated realm, she was a functional potter who studied with Michael Cardew yet later in life created the most sophisticated assemblages (ala Giorgio Morandi) that gave permission to artists such as Edmund DeWaal to create massive installations of pottery forms. Gwyn, you will be always missed and thank you for your years with us at Garth Clark Gallery, forever a cornerstone in our gallery career. See more
