The biggest butterfly in the world is larger than the birds you see at your feeders! This is the Queen Alexandra's Birdwing butterfly and it has a wingspan of nearly a foot! The Queen Alexandra's Birdwing is a rare butterfly from Papua New Guinea experiencing declining populations as a result of habitat loss and collectors. The first specimen was collected by an early 20th century naturalist who used a shotgun to knock it out of the air. (Overkill maybe?) September is Butterfly Month here at Genesee County Park and Forest... You can celebrate by reading more about the Alexandra's Birdwing at the link below!
