From dark dramas and science fiction to fantasy and German splatter-horror, German genre films are fueled by dedicated fans, filmmakers, and festivals. Daniel Chaffey from Goethe-Institut Los Angeles takes us on a journey of genre film and explains why more and more, young German and Austrian directors are turning toward genre films for creative freedom found in few other genres, and how these films are reaching new international audiences. #CustomCulture #ArtBlog #artblogger #GermanCulture #goetheinstitute #GermanFilm #GermanArt #genrefilm #Germanfilms #GermanFilmmaker #filmculture #filmhistory

Live from 1014 and the American Council on Germany: a discussion on trust in democratic institutions with Thomas Carothers, Senior Vice President for Studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Laura Krause, Director of More in Common, Germany.
In 1804, after a five-year exploration through Spanish colonies, famed German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) arrives in the United States. Here, he regularly meets with prominent scholarly and political figures in Philadelphia and Washington, including President Jefferson, and provides the US government with geographical and statistical material that he had taken from the Spanish archives in Madrid and Mexico. In her talk on Sunday, November 8th at 12 PM ET, hi...storian and Humboldt scholar Dr. Sandra Rebok explores the questions of how useful these documents actually were for Jefferson’s vision for the West; why Humboldt felt entitled to freely dispose of this knowledge; and what this means for our modern understanding of science and its role in society. Leading up to the talk, we also invite you to join us for the film stream of HUMBOLDT IN MEXICO: THE VISION OF THE EXPLORER (2017) by Mexican filmmaker Ana Cruz. The documentary film follows Humboldt's adventure of discovery and exploration throughout New Spain, an area that includes present-day Mexico. Available to stream between November 6-8 for audiences in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
