Kicking off my #bookcoverchallenge with this beautiful book 'Renegade Beauty' by Nadine Artemis. I use it like a recipe book that I go back to when I'm in the mood to create something for my family or myself. Nadine has an in depth knowledge about how to use essential oils and so much more for a nurturing self-care regime. I especially like her chapter on taking care of your teeth #bookcoverchallenge #selfcare #renegatebeauty ... #nadineartemis #essentialoils See more

Summer are you finally here? Hard to believe due to these still cold nights, but according to the traditional chinese solar calendar it officially started on May 5th on the northern hemisphere. Days are getting longer, flowers are blooming, yang is rising and the fire phase rules this time of the year. One thing to mention from the observation of the past month, the continued cold and wet weather can have the effect of restricting the Yang movement in the body. This can show ...up as unusual joint pain, fatigue, diarrhea and digestive weakness. For those who are experiencing these symptoms you can warm the acupuncture point ST36 with moxa, a hairdryer or a heat pack. Please also make sure to dress adequately for the cold mornings and nights, and the hot midday. My mom calls it the onion method layers and layers of clothes you take off/on as the temperature changes. The health guideline for this seasonal node is to nourish the heart by engaging in things you enjoy, that make you laugh and happy. If you can allow yourself from not being too closely connected to the news, it might be a good break for the emotional heart in this challenging time of Covid - 19. Meditation and physical exercise becomes even more important in the nourishment of the heart - body - mind connection to keep the heart fire under control. Heart Fire in excess can lead to insomnia, anxiety, over worry, dry stool, red eyes, excess thirst and panic attacks. Drinking plenty of plain water and / or herbal teas such as mint or floral teas that are not caffeinated are a great way to stay balanced in this time. Avoid overeating heavy, greasy and sweet foods that have a tendency to create internal heat in your body. For those of you who like to juice and drink smoothies, always listen to your gut, look at the weather forecast and enjoy them on the warm / hot days. #beginningofsummer #24solarterms #livewithseason #selfcare

Let's continue our foraging tour through the garden... ART by @jaimereynolds_ Dame's rocket { Hesperis matronalis; Brassicaseae }... Not quite out yet, but once it blooms you can see Dame's rocket all over the Hudson valley. Most commonly seen at the edge of woods, on road sides, and of course in gardens these beautiful white and purple flowers can grow 2-4' tall and have some mystìc to them. The Latin name "Hesperis" = evening, gives away their secret. This short lived plant only releases it's lovely, sweet scent at night Dame's rocket is a biennial of the mustard family, so you can use it's young leaves before it flowers like arugula and once in bloom, sprinkle the flowers into salads. My first encounter with this plant was eating the flowers in a floral butter and it's leaves cooked into a coconut soup. Absolutely delicious and so beautiful to eat a piece of sourdough bread with butter that is bursting with purple and white petals Leaves are high in vitamin C that this plant was used to treat scurvy. Fantastic immune booster Always make sure to ID the plant properly. Closely look at leaves, stalk, flowers and habitat. So far I haven't mentioned any plants that have poisonous lookalikes but please always be careful when foraging #damesrocket #foragingfood #wildherbs #eatwild #eatflowers #golden_light_acupuncture @ New Paltz, New York

Gy ( chin. ) or grain rain is the 6th solar terms in the Chinese calendar. This year from April 19th - May 5th 2020. True to the name we are seeing and expecting alot of rain here in the upstate Hudson valley area. Gy also marks the last seasonal node of spring, since early may marks the beginning of summer in the Chinese calendar. Yey! We are getting closer to the warm, sunny days folks!!! From a Chinese medical point of view we want to notice that this is the time of... transition from spring to summer, also called the 'Earth phase'. We want to pay close attention to the stomach & spleen energy, our digestive as well as the immune system. Making sure that Qi & Blood is moving smoothly without causing stagnation is key at this time. Easiest way to do this by yourself without the help of your acupuncturist is to do acupressure on the points called Shi Xuan. These points are located one each on every fingertip and toe. Massage by sqeezing fingers and toes daily. A supportive diet for this time is to make sure we don't overeat, eat too greasy and fried foods but rather go for the easy to digest, seasonal foods, like Asparagus, long cooked grains and eggs. During the earth phase we also tend to be more vulnerable, so make sure to dress appropriately. Winds can still be cold even when the sun is out. Next time more about lì xià - the beginning of summer #grainrain #24solarterms #24chineseseasonalnodes #guyu #liveinharmonywithnature #golden_light_acupuncture

Wild Edibles in your backyard ART by @jaimereynolds_ Wild Violet { Viola odorata; Violaceae }... There are many many different kinds of violets that are edible. The most common one we find wild is the sweet violet or wild violet that is native to Europe and has deep purple to white petals. The flowers have a sweet scent and the leaves of the viola odorata kind are beautifully heart shaped. As described in Hoffman’s book, best known as a cough remedy for bronchitis, for colds and sore throats. The reason this plant is used for colds comes from it’s really high amount of vitamin A & C. A study compared violet leaf vitamin A & C content to that of oranges and spinach and found that the basal leaves, collected in spring have twice as much vitamin A & C as the same weight of oranges and spinach. Pretty impressive! I like to eat the violet blossoms in salads, garnish dishes to make them look pretty, make flower butter out of them or even gorgeous violet sugar. The potent leaves are great for strong nourishing teas, salads and in wild herb pesto. #wildviolet #sweetviolet #jaimereynolds #plantart #wildherbs #eatflowers #eathealthy #golden_light_acupuncture

Wild edible herbs you can find in your backyard ART by @jaimereynolds_ Wild Onion/ Field Garlic {Allium vineale; Amaryllidaceae }... A perennial, bulb-forming herb, you won’t be able to miss if it grows in your garden. It appears in patches and looks like chives. Pick one of those long stringy hollow leaves that like to curl at the tip and you will immediately know it’s the right herb if it has a strong garlic/ onion odor. The whole plant is great for cleansing the blood, getting the blood pressure down, clearing phlegm from lungs, tonifiying the digestive system and calming the nervous system. A tincture can be made and used to prevent colic in children and to treat cough. It contains sulphur compounds, which gives it the onion/garlic flavor. I found in one of the herbal books that you can use the juice of the plant as a moth and insect repellent not quite sure I want the onion smell in my closet or for my whole body to smell like onion when I go on hikes ;-) Right now is the perfect time to dig up the bulbs of this plant and use it raw or cooked in your dishes like you would use onions. I personally love them cut up in stir fry and raw in my potato salad. The nutrient part worth mentioning for the wild onion is the high amounts of Vit K and folic acid. Great for bones and brain! #fieldgarlic #wildonion #foragedfood #watercolor #paintingherbs #springherbs #eathealthy #eatwild #golden_light_acupuncture @ New Paltz, New York

Have you ever tried pickled Magnolia petals? The taste reminds me alot of the pickled ginger that comes with sushi with a slight hint of cardamom. If you are lucky to have a beautifully blooming Magnolia tree then go ahead and try it yourself. Pack the petals in a jar, dissolve 1-2 tbsp of sugar in rice vinegar and pour over flowers until they are covered. They will float to the surface so make sure you give it a shake once a day. They are ready to eat in 3-5 days ... #pickledmagnolia #magnolia #eatableflowers #foragedfood #pickledfood #golden_light_acupuncture @ New Paltz, New York
