This weekend we had a very special visitor, President Grant (portrayed by Curt Fields) stopped by his Grant Cottage home and delighted visitors enjoying the Historic Site. During the President's visit we were fortunate to be able to record a special presentation that we look forward to sharing with everyone soon. #livinghistory #PresidentGrant

Rest in peace Mrs. Julia Dent Grant, who passed on this day in 1902 at the age of 76. While Julia's memoirs were not published in her lifetime, they thankfully began print in 1975. Read a brief history via this link and consider reading her full story by her own account. #firstlady #grant #memoirs #readhistory

Did you know? Ulysses S. Grant named a giant sequoia #tree as the #GeneralGrant Tree in now Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks? The ~2,000-year-old tree over 270 feet high was later named the Nation’s Christmas Tree. The "Nation's Christmas Tree" is a national shrine and living memorial. Each #Christmas, a wreath is laid at the tree’s base to honor the United States’ fallen war heroes.

One of the things that makes Grant Cottage so special is the dedicated volunteers that enthusiastically share the site with the public. The historic site relies on their generosity to bring the compelling and relevant story of U.S. Grant to thousands of visitors every season. Even with the difficulties presented by the pandemic, they remained committed to the mission of interpreting history. To help recognize the contributions of these inspiring individuals we ask you to share in the comments any positive experiences you may have had with our volunteer staff.
