Remember to wear your mask and especially protect our senior citizens. Sergeant Joseph Colwell (pictured) is one of our most beloved and respected retired members. Years later and he is still setting an example for us!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Hudson City Police Department The Hudson City Police Department joins North American rail-safety operation aimed at reducing preventable deaths and injuries on rail lines... HUDSON, NY (SEPTEMBER 22, 2020) The Hudson City Police Department is proud to be joining forces with first responder agencies in the U.S. and Canada today for Operation Clear Track the single largest rail-safety initiative in North America. Coordinated by Amtrak, Operation Lifesaver Inc. and Operation Lifesaver Canada, Operation Clear Track aims to reduce the number of railway crossing and trespassing incidents in the U.S. and Canada incidents which seriously injure or kill more than 2,100 people each year. The event is held during the annual observance of Rail Safety Week, September 21-27. In light of the recent tragedy just north of our city, this awareness program is particularly relevant Chief Moore , Hudson Police Chief The goal of Operation Clear Track and Rail Safety Week is to raise awareness of the importance of safe behavior near tracks and trains, in support of OLI’s mission to save lives, said Operation Lifesaver, Inc. Executive Director Rachel Maleh. Because of the ongoing pandemic, first responder agencies will be participating in a virtual Operation Clear Track event this year. These agencies across North America will be promoting rail safety through social media messages, by sharing Operation Lifesaver’s #STOPTrackTragedies public service announcements and other videos, and by posting other rail safety information to their department websites. Participants will also be emphasizing the importance of obeying rail crossing and trespassing laws throughout Rail Safety Week. For more information about Rail Safety Week, Operation Clear Track, and other rail-safety initiatives and tips, please visit www.oli.org. ### About Operation Lifesaver Operation Lifesaver, Inc. is a nonprofit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail crossings and preventing trespassing on or near railroad tracks. A national network of trained volunteers gives free presentations on rail safety and a public awareness campaign, See Tracks? Think Train! provides tips and statistics to encourage safe behavior near the tracks. OLI leads an international observance of Rail Safety Week each September. Local fisherman James Gabriel captured a video of what appears to be a shark swimming north between Hudson and Athens. The video was shot facing west near the lighthouse. What do you think?

HPD PARTICIPATING IN SPEED AWARENESS WEEK WITH LOCAL AGENCIES - WATCH FOR PATROLS AUGUST 6 THRU 12 Speed Awareness Week Enforcement Mobilization... SPEED CONTINUES TO BE A PREDOMINANT FACTOR IN TRAFFIC CRASHES IN NEW YORK STATE In 2018, nearly one-third (29%) of all traffic fatalities in New York were caused by speeding*; 274 people lost their lives* and 1,984 suffered serious injuries** in these preventable collisions; The number of fatal crashes caused by unsafe speed increased during the summer months with the highest totals in June, July, August, and September**; More than one-third (36%) of the speed-related fatal and personal injury crashes occurred between noon and 6pm**; NHTSA says 3 in 10 people speed. These drivers are also more likely to engage in other risky behaviors (no seat belt, drinking and driving, or using a cell phone while driving). Speeding endangers not only the life of the speeder, but all people on the road around them. Proactive law enforcement is a primary weapon in curbing this deadly behavior. THE GTSC INVITES LAW ENFORCEMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN SPEED AWARENESS WEEK, A HIGH-VISIBILITY ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN AIMED AT REDUCING INCIDENCE OF SPEED-RELATED CRASHES. Enforcement Dates: August 6 12, 2020 GTSC grantees may use awarded Police Traffic Services (PTS) hours to participate in the mobilization. Targeted speed enforcement details should occur on roadways identified in an agency’s approved PTS project, where data indicates there is a crash issue related to speed. Police agencies are encouraged to promote the campaign in their community and alert media and the courts that increased speed enforcement will be occurring. Participation in the mobilization should be noted on the grantee’s final PTS progress report (due to the GTSC by Oct. 15).

Today HPD said goodbye to a fantastic public servant. For 20 years Elizabeth Miss Betty Scott has been our honest, tireless , and knowledgeable Senior Clerk. Miss Betty made sure everything was done right and every penny accounted for. The City of Hudson has lost a true professional. We all wish her a long and happy retirement.

Press Release HPD Installs Syringe Kiosk The Hudson Police Department has installed a large Sharps & Syringe disposal cabinet in lobby of the station located at 701 Union Street. The public will be allowed 24 hour access to the container in order to safely dispose of Sharps items like hypodermic needles, syringes, lancets, and wires to include dental wires. This simple device, along with our prescription disposal box will help to make our environment safer. We absolu...tely do not want needles ending up in our trash or on our sidewalks. Prescription medicine dumped down the drain contaminates our water supply. Citizens are often unsure where they can safely dispose of these items, and sometimes become frustrated trying to locate where to do so. This now becomes a more convenient process. The cabinet was acquired with state funding and a memorandum of understanding was established between the Hudson City Police Department and the Columbia County Health Department. The Health Department will oversee the safe collection and disposal of all items that are collected. I credit Columbia County Health Department Public Health Educator VICTORIA MCGAHAN with making this happen. She and Director JACK MABB are extremely busy these days with the COVID pandemic. Somehow they found the time to provide this very important service that will no doubt increase public safety Chief (Director Mabb pictured with HPD Lt. Miller)

If there's a will, there's a way..... In January 2017 we started the quest to outfit all of our police officers with body cameras. It was a piecemeal approach, expanding our program as we applied and obtained grant money. Yesterday we realized our goal when Branda Maholtz from the HUDSON DEVELOPMENT CORP. dropped off a check from the HRBT FOUNDATION. The grant will allow us to purchase the remaining cameras needed to fully compliment our patrols. We are extremely thankful for HRBT FOUNDATION for its community involvement. Chief
