Hudson Valley Weather 06.05.2021

Wednesday Discussion : Cold and Stormy End to the Week Morning sunshine will allow the temperatures to quickly rise into the 60s... possibly near 70 in the northern Hudson Valley, where the skies will remain mostly sunny for longer. Clouds will advance quickly near mid day on Wednesday, and spotty rain showers and even an isolated rumble of thunder is possible. Conditions become cold and stormy on Thursday as a coastal storm develops. Temps will fall into the 30s Thursday night, and we'll have to monitor the potential for some wet snow to mix in. Tuesday Discussion : Trouble is Brewing Clouds will quickly give way to sunshine on Tuesday, as our disturbance from Monday drifts southward and out to sea. Our winds will be out of the northeast, which will prevent temperatures from getting too warm, but we should see afternoon highs into the low 60s under mostly sunny skies. A fine improvement over our Monday weather. But an upper level low pressure threatens to bring a cold and raw... and possibly even wintry end to the work week. Hudson Valley Weather 31.03.2021

-Mid Day Monday Update- Graphic: Monday 1pm Radar loop We have a cloudy and unsettled start to the work week in the Hudson Valley. A frontal boundary associated with a low pressure over the Great Lakes will linger in our region through tonight, before slowly exiting the region by Tuesday morning. Until then, we'll be mainly cloudy with periods of light rain showers and drizzle. Expect damp and chilly conditions, with temps holding in the upper 40s and low 50s.... Conditions will improve on Tuesday as the moisture exits the region. However, it seems like low clouds may hold on, and could keep temps in the low to mid 50s. But if we get breaks of sun, we could see temps climb into the upper 50s and low 60s Tuesday afternoon. The next chance for rain comes on Thursday, as an upper level low pressure and coastal storm take aim on the northeast. That has the potential to bring a cold rain, with temps in the 30s and low 40s on Thursday into Friday. Depending on the exact details... some wet snow could mix in, especially in the higher elevations like the Catskills. We'll keep an eye on everything. Have a great afternoon!

3pm Radar Discussion Low clouds and humidity have moved into the Hudson Valley, and scattered rain showers and drizzle are now breaking out across the region. If you look at the most recent radar, you can see the flow out of the south that is pulling moisture from NJ, up the Hudson Valley. There is a lot of moisture to our south, and the frontal boundary that brought the moisture isn't going anywhere, any time soon. Periods of light... to at times moderate rain, will conti...nue through midnight. Rain may taper off for a time late tonight... but it appears that more periods of rain will develop on Monday. So conditions will remain unsettled and damp for at least the next 24 hours... and likely into Tuesday as well. Temperatures around the region Sunday afternoon are in the upper 50s and low 60s with the scattered showers. But temperatures will tumble into the 40s tonight... and stay there through the day on Monday. Temps Monday afternoon are expected to hold in the mid 40s for the valley, and even a bit colder in the Catskills. A FAR cry from our gorgeous weather of late. But the rainfall is much needed, so all in all, it's a good thing. Have a nice afternoon and evening!

7:00pm Radar Discussion The radar is really filling in at this hour, with a solid band of steady snow overspreading the entire Hudson Valley. The heaviest band of snow extends from Binghamton to Albany, but there are some moderate to heavy bands of snow running through Dutchess County, and another through Greene County. In addition, there is more snow heading our way, back in eastern PA. So we have several more hours of snow ahead of us. - Steady Snow through 10pm... - Snow tapers to snow showers and ends 10pm to 2am - Additional snow : 1 to 3 inches ... 2 to 4 inches total expected - Temperatures : 30 to 33 in the valley (28 to 32 higher elevations) - Snow covered and icy roads possible Stay warm and safe!

4:15pm Radar Discussion The snow is filling in on radar off to our west, and heading this way. Moderate to heavy snow is falling in NE Pennsylvania, and the snow shield is just about to the NY/PA border. Areas of light snow continue to fall around the region out ahead of it, with a dusting to a half inch on the ground so far. Computer guidance continues to suggest that the arrival of this moderate snow band occurs over the next 2 hours... and lasts until almost midnight in... most areas. With the sun setting around the region, the snow will stick to all surfaces as we move through the evening. Guidance continues to suggest that additional snowfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are likely, with some spots in the western HV possibly seeing as much as 4 or 5 inches. Travel will become slick tonight, so make sure you use caution if you are on the roads after dark. This storm is quite a disorganized mess... but it still promises to deliver some snow to the region tonight. Stay warm and stay safe everyone.

2:00pm Radar Discussion After a few snow showers this morning, and a period of snow in a few areas... we have cloudy skies and temps in the low 30s around the Hudson Valley. Our very disorganized storm system continues to look rather unimpressive on radar. You can see the area of precipitation trying to enhance and expand over Pennsylvania, as it pushes east-northeast. The area of snow to our west is associated with the upper level low pressure, but the coastal low pressur...e has little if any moisture associated with it. As we go through the afternoon, the snow in Pennsylvania will continue to expand in coverage and push east, toward the Hudson Valley. It should arrive in the Hudson Valley between 3pm and 6pm in most places... and then snow steadily until 10 or 11pm. Our disorganized little system is still projected to give the region 2 to 5 inches in general, with the bulk of the accumulating snow falling between 5pm and 11pm. Road conditions during that time could be treacherous, as temps should be below freezing, and supporting of snow accumulation, even on paved surfaces The disorganized nature of the system has led to unpredictability with the timing and snowfall totals thus far... so we'll see if the guidance is correct with the idea of expanding and enhancing snow this afternoon and evening... despite a very unimpressive radar.

First batch of snow is now entering the region from the SW and will overspread the region over the next 1-2 hours.

Sunday Discussion : Final Snowfall Forecast A weak storm tries to come together over the mid Atlantic on Sunday, and as it looks now, it does not quite become a significant storm. Instead, we're left with a rather minor, disorganized system... that still has the potential to cause some problems for our Sunday and Sunday night. Timing:... - 11am to 3pm : Snow starts from SW to NE - 3pm to 8pm : Steadiest snow expected - 9pm to 1am : Snow ends from west to east Impact: - Temperatures 32 to 35 at the onset of snow - Wet snow accumulation likely... even on paved surfaces - Hazardous travel Sunday night likely, slick Mon AM commute possible Snow Accumulation: - Catskills, Mid & Lower Hudson Valley : 2 to 5 inches - Upper Hudson Valley (Northern half of Zone 3 & Zone 4) : 1 to 3 inches Complete Discussion : https://hudsonvalleyweather.com/?p=187505
