Last year, the ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour was universally ratified; All 187 member States have now committed to take action to protect children against sexual exploitation, recruitment in armed conflicts, recruitment by organized crime for illicit activities and hazardous work Today, we kicked off the the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour, together with UNICEF and Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi. Today, the UN General Assembly convened a special session to address the COVID-19 pandemic, the greatest health crisis since the creation of the UN. The pandemic has turned into a socio-economic crisis, with far-reaching effects. The United Nations system-wide response to COVID-19 is based on three pillars: a large-scale, coordinated, comprehensive health response; a wide-ranging effort to safeguard lives and livelihoods; and a transformative recovery process. During the sess...ion, UN leaders called for urgent action to respond to the crisis, and many highlighted the particular need for: Social protection systems Gender-sensitive approaches Targeted actions for women and youth Debt suspension A green recovery Recovering from the pandemic will require joint efforts at all levels.
