Today, the UN General Assembly convened a special session to address the COVID-19 pandemic, the greatest health crisis since the creation of the UN. The pandemic has turned into a socio-economic crisis, with far-reaching effects. The United Nations system-wide response to COVID-19 is based on three pillars: a large-scale, coordinated, comprehensive health response; a wide-ranging effort to safeguard lives and livelihoods; and a transformative recovery process. During the sess...ion, UN leaders called for urgent action to respond to the crisis, and many highlighted the particular need for: Social protection systems Gender-sensitive approaches Targeted actions for women and youth Debt suspension A green recovery Recovering from the pandemic will require joint efforts at all levels.
