Huge congratulations to author Juan Cardenas and translator Lizzie DavisORNAMENTAL [ORNAMENTO] was just selected as a finalist for the 2021 PEN Translation Prize! In this novel, published in English by Coffee House Press the lives of a doctor, his wife, and his patient collide, laying bare the political and personal narratives they have carefully constructed for themselves. A doctor recruits volunteers for the trial of a new recreational drug that exclusively affects wome...n. Among them is "number 4," who becomes emotionally involved with first the scientist, then his wife, a well-known visual artist in the midst of a creative crisis. The scientist is oblivious to the atrocities his new drug will bring to the city; his wife is oblivious to the superfluousness of the objects she has committed her life to exhibiting in galleries and museums. Number 4's presence pierces the couple's complacency, gradually undoing the many certainties they've accumulated in their lives of ease. According to Nathan Scott McNamara (The New York Times), Ornamental "channels the ways that egomaniacs in science and artin any fieldrise to the top, up the pyramid of capitalism (...) the rhythm of Cardenas's writing compels and reassures, as if driven by the very humanity the lab has helped suppress." Among other places, it has also received great reviews and press in World Literature Today, Cleveland Review of Books, Publishers Weekly, and Southwest Review, where Cardenas's short story "The Bird" was also just published. ORNAMENTO is also published in Spanish by Editorial Periférica, Tusquets Editores, Editorial Almadía, Editorial Sigilo, and Dum Dum editora, and in Italian by edizioni sur. More information about the book and author can be found on our website: http://www.indentagency.com/ornamento

David Unger's SLEEPING WITH THE LIGHT ON, a bittersweet story of life amid war, is out now with Groundwood Books! Life in Guatemala is simple for young Davico and his older brother Felipe ... until soldiers invade, and the blackouts begin. Davico lives with his family above La Casita the Little House in Guatemala City in the early 1950s. But it’s not just a little house. It’s also the family restaurant! The restaurant provides plenty of distraction and adventure for Dav...ico and his older brother, Felipe. Until one day, Davico hears shooting in the streets. There are blackouts every evening, and the family must sleep under the big wooden table in the dining room. People stop coming to the restaurant, and tanks and soldiers swarm the front of the National Palace, where a shoeshine boy warns the brothers that the gringos are coming. But what does that mean, and who are the gringos? Davico ants to be brave, but the shooting and tanks and airplanes flying overhead terrify him. He finds comfort in the special lamp that his father buys him to endure the blackouts. But it is not enough to console Davico when his parents announce that it’s time to leave for the United States of America, where no one speaks Spanish, and everything is different. According to the Canadian Review of Materials, this book "speaks to the many similar situations occurring in strife-ridden countries even now, providing much opportunity for discussion. Sleeping with the Light On is an unusual and rewarding read for children aged 6 to 10. English rights are with Groundwood Books/House of Anansi Press. Ya en las librerías españolas Nicanor Parra, rey y mendigo de Rafael Gumucio, un libro que puede leerse como una biografía aunque, en el fondo, es algo más: un libro de memorias y recuerdos y conjeturas sobre uno de los poetas en castellano más importantes del siglo XX.

PERFILES ANFIBIOS [AMPHIBIAN PROFILES: PERSONALITIES THAT MARKED THE DECADE IN LATIN AMERICA] by Felipe Restrepo Pombo (with a prologue by Leila Guerriero and Juan Pablo Meneses) is out this month with Encino Ediciones! Editor, journalist, and writer Felipe Restrepo Pombo has done himself the favor of accomplishing two things: the first, having the drive and wisdom to insist until he gets what he wants (interviews with these celebrities), and the second, refraining from be...lieving what their representatives tell him about them, staying firmly anchored to the idea that behind every celebrity is a human being. The lives of people who have shaped the past decade in Latin America: Juan Manuel Santos, Jorge Ramos, Ingrid Betancourt, Mario Vargas Llosa, Gael García & Diego Luna, Gastón Acurio, Ruven Afanador, Antanas Mockus, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, René Redzepi, and Juanes. In the words of Jon Lee Anderson, "Restrepo Pombo has a rare talent among contemporary writers: he is capable of dedicating himself to both fiction and journalismaside from being a first-rate editorto create stories that are both fascinating and always relevant. Spanish (Central America) rights are with Encino Ediciones. More information about the book and author can be found on our website: http://www.indentagency.com/perfiles-anfibios

See more

THE WIG: A HAIRBRAINED HISTORY [HISTORIA DESCABELLADA DE LA PELUCA] by Luigi Amara (translated by Christina MacSweeney), a witty and eloquent reflection on the history of the wig and Western civilization, is out now in English with Reaktion Books! Whether in a court room or a dressing room, wigs come in many forms, and represent many things: from power, to sexuality, to parody, to health, to self-identity, to disguise. Wigs are present at parties and in chemotherapy rooms, ...in pop music and contemporary art. Amara illuminates how the wig has starred throughout history, from ancient Egypt to the court of Louis XIV, and from British courtrooms to drag shows today. Containing many striking and unusual images, the book appeals to a wide audience, from those interested in the history of fashion to philosophy, art, culture and aesthetics. The book was originally published by Editorial Anagrama in Spanish, and rights have also sold to Berenberg Verlag (German) and Storytel (Spanish Audio). An excerpt in English was published by Asymptote, and more information about the book and author can be found on our website: http://www.indentagency.com/historia-descabellada-de-la-pel
