On this day 43 years ago the Space Shuttle Enterprise concluded its final approach and landing test (ALT). These tests were used to verify orbiter aerodynamics and handling while preparing for flights with the Space Shuttle Columbia. 35 years later, it made its way aboard the Intrepid Museum.

Lt. Robert E. Kutzleb was a missile guidance officer onboard the Submarine Growler. He wore this hard hat while performing his duties. The primary job of the missile guidance officer was to direct and control missile crews and missile system. For safety and security reasons, only crew members with specific jobs relating to the Regulus I missile were allowed access to the hangars where the missiles were stored. Learn more about the roles and responsibilities of Growler crew members on our Google Arts & Culture channel. http://bit.ly/2lm4qCj

Every fall thousands of students and teachers take part in collecting data to create snapshots of the Hudson River Estuary at more than 90 sites, including upstate. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum partners with Hudson River Park’s River Project in a joint effort to monitor water quality parameters and the overall ecology of our local Hudson River ecosystem. Join us this Thursday at 2:00pm EST as we celebrate A Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor! Tune in to the Hudson River Park River Project’s Instagram Live feed @HudsonRiverPark.

There’s more to aircraft than wings and engines. Get up close to the aircraft in our collection to learn how symbols and paint schemes set each airplane apart. Then create a family squadron insignia and decorate an airplane. https://bit.ly/2H8JPjm

What is there to archive on a ship? Everything! We never know what we’ll find still on Intrepid long after service. When an artifact is found, it is photographed in place and then taken to storage to be processed just like any other collection. This Emergency Situation & Response card was found in a Battle Dressing Station on board and now it lives with the rest of the Intrepid archives. #NationalArchiveMonth
