Three distinguished experts on environmental stewardship joined JHC board member Sara Goddard this autumn to debate strategies for opening a meaningful dialogue about critical issues in the natural world. At the virtual program, titled Voices for a Green Recovery: Taking Action on Climate Change from the Ground Up, Goddard led a fascinating discussion with Andrew Revkin, environmental journalist and founding director of the Initiative on Communication and Sustainability at Columbia University’s Earth Institute; Eric Sanderson, author of Manahatta: A Natural History of New York City; and Doug Tallamy, author of Nature’s Best Hope and Bringing Nature Home. RYE, New York, August 17, 2020 The Covid-19 pandemic may have stalled capital projects at many museums, historic sites, and parksbut not at the Jay Estate, the 23-acre National Historic Landmark in Rye, New York. This summer the site broke ground on a major garden project that will continue the reclamation and restoration of its historic landscape. Overlooking Long Island Sound, the property was once the family seat of nation maker John Jay, who helped abolish slavery in N...ew York State. Today the Jay Estate is a home for ideas, civil dialogue, and action about social and environmental justice and much more. Operated by the nonprofit Jay Heritage Center (JHC) for the benefit of the public, the landparticularly its stunning viewshedgives context to the stories of its diverse inhabitants going back thousands of years. Loved catching up with renowned meadow expert Larry Weaner yesterday and his amazing associate Marli Milano. We walked through the Jay meadow with them both and saw how the native grasses and plants are really taking hold - huge drifts of little bluestem create a beautiful blue haze and are successfully outcompeting the acres of invasive mugwort that were there before. Splashes of color from nodding onion, horsemint and butterfly weed are attracting monarchs and bees. It is such a huge and welcome difference to have a healthy habitat for wildlife!

See the place where it happened! Millions streamed Lin Manuel-Miranda's musical epic Hamilton this holiday weekend. But it's missing some pivotal events, one of which happened right here in Westchester County. Want to learn more about one of the most decisive moments of the Revolutionary War?
