In 2008, I asked Sensei if he would mind teaching a class to my students in New York ... from the Honbu Dojowhile I was there training. As it was morning in Japan, evening classes were underway back home, so it worked out. We had already been streaming for a year on Budohall, so Sensei was pretty happy to try it out. Here, he is sharing a yari from his personal collection with students in New York. He shared items I had never even seen before. A great memory indeed. #jinenkan #martialarts

Trained last night. Not easy. But if you want to understand taijutsu - you must commit to dexterity, resilience and allowing yourself to BECOME the opponent's attack at times, rather than always looking for a technique that works in opposition. In order to flow, you must be supple, fluid and able to get thrown without effect.

. Many things in Budo can be easily translated, others cannot. It's easy to google, or look at someone else's translation or even have a master brush it for a couple hundred bucks ... But this is just someone else's understanding, their reality. Indeed, I rely on my colleagues who are smarter, my teachers who I trust deeply ... without them, I'd be lost. But some things must be discovered. And in my observation, only the journey can get you there, not some explana...tion. No expensive book, old scroll, online course or retreat in the woods will give you this. You might think your Sensei is more legit than mine, I may think mine is more legit than yours. Meanwhile, it's all nonsense, ego fueled distractions from the true path. At the end of the day you walk with yourself, your conscience speaks only to you. Have you truly done the work to 'get it'? In order to discover the spirit of the art, you have to let go of expectations, vanity, insecurity. Stop thinking you are better than someone else, your teacher is better, your belt is better, or your method is superior ... It isn't. It's just you. And to grow beyond this, you must become vulnerable. Easy paths give easy answers, and rigorous paths answer more difficult questions. The path you take is up to you. Whether you show up, that's up to you. But whatever path, just don't quit. #jinenkan #traditionalmartialarts #dojo

Planning a 3 day Gasshuku for Kobudo. Dec 4-6, but will be offering prep for entire week to everyone who signs up. Diet, junan tasio, meiso /zazen, taijutsu, sojutsu, kenjutsu and cultural art breakouts on shodo .. All training will be virtual, but very different than just zoom - there will be a dedicated app for it. I’ll be covering all areas of keiko and lifestyle, high level guest instructors. It will be completely donation based, so anyone can attend without financial co...ncern. It will not be associated to any organization and will be completely based on bettering personal performance. The only requirement... you show up and train. More announcements soon, but if you are truly interested in gassuku, committing three days to immersing in this lifestyle - please let me know. Then continue with the kata of the Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu Sabaki Gata. Koppojutsu: 7pm. Sutemi waza kihon and OGyaku (Shoden kata) Bojutsu: 8pm. Begin filling in the gaps to the Sabaki Gata with Tsuru no Issoku and Ura Issoku. TUESDAY OCTOBER 20 TRAINING: Join us live on YouTube at 7pm. Bojutsu: Chudan uke kihon and Gorin Kudaki, Sabaki Gata WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 21 TRAINING: Tonight we continue the kata of Jinen Ryu Nitojutsu, two swords techniques. But first, Koppojutsu! The study of Budo has taught me the weakness in simply discarding something you count on, when it breaks. When I who put huge stress on something, only to abandon it when it breaks ... and it will break, as everything under constant pressure does... there’s shame for me especially in this reality. These are my training tools, two are over twenty years old. I count on them to teach and to train daily. To keep myself and my training parters safe. They’ve travelled the world w...ith me. It’s a lot to ask. When they break, it would make sense to simply buy a new one, as it takes a lot of time to rebuild them. Instead, I rebuild them quietly in my Dojo, focussed on how each one feels. I try new knots, better quality bamboo, different padding in the tip. Every time they break, I build them back stronger and more beautiful, even though the years have changed their color and left countless tears and scars. To most these are just bamboo training tools, but to me the ‘simple’ training is in the use of them ... the deeper training - so often missed - is the honoring, respecting and care taking of the role they serve on my path ... and hopefully the paths of others when I am gone.
