Sister Kateri Mitchell Retires From 1998 to 2017, she served as the executive director of the Tekakwitha Conference. In reflecting on her work, she stated, "Yes..., 60 years sharing with people in many places and many religious backgrounds with hundreds of tribes and nations in North America and many other countries. This year’s St. Kateri Native Mass has also been canceled due to Covid-19 precautions.

Fr. Peter Cholenic, a priest who knew Kateri well, said this of her, "her eyes, her gestures, her words were filled with divine love. If one were with her, it did not take long to be touched by it, and to be warmed with this heavenly fire."

He said to them, I AM.

"Disfigured by the smallpox that killed her father and mother, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha became the first Native American to be canonized. Try to look beyond appearances to see the goodness in every person."

On the Wednesday of Holy Week in 1680, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was released from her earthly body. This depiction of her by Mohawk artist Michael Terrance resides in the museum at the Shrine.

Today is the 340th anniversary of Saint Kateri's death. This stone carving of Saint Kateri, which resides in the Shrine's Native American museum, was created by Michael Terrance, a Mohawk artist from Syracuse, who gifted it to the Shrine in 1992.
