David Pilgrim: #LooongPost #StrapYourselvesIn So to say these people rescued me would be an understatement. At the time we connected, like 13 years ago I had stopped playing music in public for about 2 years, had given into the inevitability of my corporate job and was miserable and dead inside. The insanely talented Maritri Garrett came and saw me singing forlornly at a lonely solo gig, sat in on piano and voice and lifted my entire performance and my spirits. Which is what ...she does, not just for me but for countless others as well. I am truly blessed to be her musical brother and friend. She still teases me about how I was reading my lyrics off a paper and forgetting them, my confidence was so low. She invited me to an open mic she hosted the following week at a long-gone restaurant called #Voyage in the West Village. Shout out to Marcos Luis and his #OneMic event. I got there and to my amazement saw the absolute cream of the NYC rock-and-soul scene, jam-packed to the rafters, singing in 5-part harmony or twanging their acoustic axes along with her. Blown the fuck away. Corey Cornell James Glover was in the midst of tearing a hole in a song that V Jeffrey Smith had written and was killing on acoustic guitar when Corey said Someone take a solo! and I leapt in and took one. I cannot remember how or why but I knew it was my time to do it. My mind is still a blur about that moment, but the performance is on youtube, I’ll post it sometime soon. I followed that open mic for the next 3 years, becoming the resident bass player, singing my songs and entirely re-igniting my soul in the process. In that time I got to know Jeff really well, though I had been a huuuuge fan for years before of his other group the #FamilyStand. I remember letting him hear a cd of mine. Imagine when he came back and said Dave, that’s some baaad shit. I was over the moon. He is one of the kindest, most encouraging people I have ever known. Alot of how my playing and producing has developed in the last decade is due to watching his sterling example. Anyway, there were about 20 of us who performed as #SoulfolkExperience at first that dwindled down to the 3 you see now. We’ve done 2 albums together and countless other recordings. Howard Alper has been our main man on drums, my rhythm twin, for much of our time together. Proud to be his bandmate and friend. Soulfolk for me is home. And this is the first song we recorded with all of us singing lead. And its never been more timely now, considering we first released it in 2012. Know that hope endures as long as we #HoldOn.
