In honor of Black History month, we’re shining the spotlight on Black Americans whose contributions have made it possible for us to live our mission of providing extraordinary service and compassionate care. This week, we celebrate pioneering biochemist Dr. Marie Maynard Daly, who became the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry. A valiant researcher, she studied how the body constructs proteins, the cause of heart attacks, and subsequently outlined the connection between diet and heart health. Daly also encouraged minority students to pursue higher education in STEM fields.
