Kleinhans Music Hall was encouraged to hear Governor Cuomo’s announcement on March 3, 2021 regarding the reopening of venues with capacities less than 10,000. We are in the process of evaluating what this means for the reopening of the concert hall. Over the past several months, we have developed a thorough reopening plan that takes the safety of everyone into consideration musicians and guest artists, staff, volunteers, and our audience but we are in no rush. We will be taking the time necessary to consider the execution of this plan with great caution for the health and well-being of everyone involved. Please check kleinhansbuffalo.org for the latest information.
BPO Musicians Amy Licata, Andrea Blanchard-Cone, Janz Castelo, and David Schmude pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an original arrangement of Lif...t Every Voice and Sing by J. Rosamond Johnson and James Weldon Johnson. On November 9, 1967, Dr. King delivered one of his most eloquent and poignant speeches at Kleinhans Music Hall just 4 months after the Buffalo Riots of 1967, and just 5 months before his untimely death. Special thanks to University at Buffalo, Buffalo Toronto Public Media, Asbury Hall, and the BPO Diversity Council.
Even Kleinhans is getting in the spirit for today’s Buffalo Bills game! LET’S GO BUFFALO!

HAPPY ESTHER LINK NIGHT! As you can imagine, 80 years ago tonight, people were no doubt bustling around taking care of all the last minute details before the grand opening of Kleinhans Music Hall on the 12th of October, 1940. But tonight, specifically, is an even more significant anniversary: 82 years ago, on the night of October 8th, 1938, Esther Link, the acting director of Kleinhans, was up late crafting the letter that would convince Ed Letchworth, Philip Wickser, George ...Rand, and the rest of the Governing Board of the Buffalo Foundation to do anything they could to work out a solution to get Eliel Saarinen on board as the designer of Kleinhans. I can picture her sitting with her family trying to convince them to pony up $10,000 to bring Saarinen on board. (By the way, that's almost $170,000 in today's dollars.) According to Letchworth's account, he had already told the Kidd's earlier in the day that they just wouldn't be able to make it work. The Saarinens were "out of the picture." There is a draft letter in the archives dated October 8th where Letchworth had actually written to Saarinen saying thank you, but we're very sorry to say no. The next day, Sunday, October 9th, Esther came to Ed with the letter in hand and convinced him to keep trying and to not give up yet. We all know what happened next. Thanks to Esther Link, thousands and thousands of people get to experience this acoustical and architectural marvel every year. So, in honor of Esther Link and her PERSISTENCE - her determination, problem-solving skills, powers of persuasion, and downright heart - HAPPY ESTHER LINK NIGHT!! Here's to all the people of the world who stay up late writing heart-felt letters and somehow make the world a better place by not giving up! Lauren Becker, Kleinhans archivist
