Our approach was not to have pre-emptive camera positions for the violence, so you don’t suddenly cut to this low angle shot to sell the punches. Antonio and I had this idea that the violence should have the same visual language, so it comes out of nowhere and feels real, visceral, and honest. Putting two things together you don’t expect is when something interesting happens. So when my friend, the writer @sophy_roberts said she wanted to go and look for a piano in Siberia back in early 2016, she knew exactly what she was saying and to whom, says @MichaelTurek. We have worked for many years together. We bring very different energies to a project. What we share is a passion for the absurd. And in Siberia, it was everywhere. A steam-punk submarine on the banks of... Lake Baikal. Laundry hung out to try in minus thirty degrees Fahrenheit. Tsarist grandeur in a country that murdered its king. An outdoor gym on the shores of the frozen Pacific. A funfair in an old Gulag port. : @michaelturek : Kodak #Portra400 #madewithkodak @ Siberia, Russia See more

Siberia is a word filled with so many connotations ecological catastrophe, exile, snow that we tend to think of the region in general terms rather than specifics. I wanted to photograph the intimate the arsenic green walls in a Khrushchev apartment block, the relationship of a musician to his instrument, a drink on a summer’s day not just the epic landscapes, says @Michaelturek. : @michaelturek : Kodak #Portra400 ... #madewithkodak @ Siberia, Russia See more

The beginning of a three-year journey into Siberia territory that covers almost an eleventh of the world’s landmass is marked with a shot of vodka drunk from a cup carved out of a frozen Lake Baikal. But for photographer @michaelturek, it soon turned out he needed more than a toast for safe passage as he made his first winter crossing of the world’s deepest lake. I needed time, says Michael; I never imagined a place so foreign to me as an American, Siberia felt so ...off limits would become so familiar. It’s odd, given Siberia’s reputation as the largest prison without a roof, but somehow Siberia freed me up. I started to work at a completely different pace. I wasn’t trying to force the astonishing out of any given situation. I found myself in an hourless space to look and think. This enabled me to focus even more closely on the very intentional act of shooting film. Together with @sophy_roberts author of ‘The Lost Pianos of Siberia’, published this week in the US with @groveatlantic they travelled from the taiga forests of Khabarovsk, where they encountered a Siberian tiger in the wild, to the modern oil cities of Khanty-Mansiysk. To get deeper into the backcountry, they made use of any means they could: hovercrafts, helicopters, snowmobiles, and the great Trans-Siberian railroad. They journeyed down the rim of the Russian Pacific. They lodged with the indigenous reindeer herding communities of the Far North. They made a summer trip to Kolyma to encounter the haunting legacy of the Soviet Gulag. The result? 3817 images on medium format Kodak Portra 400 film edited down to 90 images in Michael’s photographic monograph, SIBERIA, published by @damiani_books. For the next three days, we will be revealing images both seen and unseen from this body of work, as well as behind-the-scenes footage from the field. : @michaelturek : Kodak #Portra400 #madewithkodak @ Siberia, Russia See more

Walking Svalbard "At the start of 2020 I visited Longyearbyen, Svalbard. During its winter months, Svalbard undergoes the dark season in which its 2,000 residents endure 24 hours of darkness and extreme weather. I relied heavily on my instinctive response to the environment rather than what I had planned to photograph prior to my visit. I became fascinated with the landscape by searching for light amidst the darkness of the night. Waking up without seeing any daylight made ...the experience feel surreal. My walk around the circumference of the town only took a little over an hour but every second of my trip was fully occupied obsessively trying to document the landscape. Although working on film in sub-zero temperatures provided its own set of challenges, it continued to be my medium of choice whenever possible throughout this project. The tactile nature of the cameras as well as the tangible product it produces continues to bring me back to the medium. Willem Verbeeck is a Belgian photographer based in New York City. In recent months he has worked on creating a publication of the images he made whilst in Svalbard, which is available for pre-order at www.willemverbeeck.com +: @willemverb : Kodak #Portra400 #MadeWithKodak @ Svalbard See more

Healthcare @kwakualston Healthcare is about more than great science and technology. It’s about human connection, extending a hand to someone in need and bringing our shared humanity into the process. Kindness, respect, compassion and dignity are both powerful human and healing qualities. My work as a photographer is to document and illuminate -- this. Over three years ago, I began a project to document my wife’s pregnancy with our first child, from selecting a doctor... to pre-natal visits to the delivery day and follow-ups for both mother and son. I got an up close, personal view of the medical world and was able to witness and capture moments of such intimacy, vulnerability and even joy between the people I care most for and those who took care of them. This work led me to launch a recent project creating portraits of a broad range of healthcare professionals, be they nurses, X-Ray techs, physical therapists or surgeons just to name a few. This work, which was both personal and professional, took me to places as different as a Marina Del Rey operating room and an eye clinic in the foothills of the Himalayas. But wherever I went, in tight conditions with so much at stake, respect for the sacred trust between doctor and patient came first, and my work was to capture this. This series was shot on a TOYO 4x5 Large Format Field Camera. I wanted to use the ambient light in the hospital to keep a low profile and not to disturb the healthcare environment. This way I was able to work alone and fast without causing inconvenience or annoyance to patients and staff. This was my first marathon. I had been training for the past 12 weeks for a marathon scheduled for the last weekend in March. Of course, that race was cancelled, but I continued to progress in my training runs. That week, Janssen had texted me and asked if my race had been cancelled, and how I was feeling about that. That text helped inspire the plan I then came up with - to run a makeshift NYC marathon route, including "water stations" set up by friends around the city alon...g my route. And they did. They made signs, set up water and gatorade for me, and then dutifully distanced themselves and cheered from afar as I made my way past each station on my route. The first long run I ever did in New York City was a 6-mile journey through Williamsburg and Chinatown with Janssen leading the way. Janssen and his wife not only helped me with a water station outside their home in Greenpoint, but also insisted on biking to Central Park and greeting me at my finish line outside Tavern on the Green. Not only do we share a love for running, but we both share a passion for shooting photos and motion picture on film, so it was fitting to have them there to celebrate and document the moment for me. I ran the 26.2 miles with a handmade flag stating "STAY STRONG NYC" and "26.2 FOR NYC." New Yorkers cheered, honked, expressed gratitude and solidarity as I ran by them through many neighborhoods from Brooklyn Heights, to Red Hook, Park Slope, Bedstuy, Bushwick, Williamsburg, Long Island City, the Upper East Side, Central Park, Upper West Side, and even Times Square. I was moved to tears seeing the response of my neighbors. I would have never been able to complete this run without the help and support of all of these amazing NYers along the way. I am proud to be NYC Tough. Stay strong, NYC. Stay strong, to all of us. Written by Bram VanderMark. Women on the Climate Frontline @rosie_matheson / @britishredcross It was important to me to photograph these women as I would anyone else. With everything I shoot, there is a sense of responsibility of capturing someone as honestly and as true to life as possible. You want to do a story justice. I wanted to stay as far away from the typical coldly-lit, depressing images you see of developing countries, and try to communicate the similarities between us all and a sense of... relatability. I’ll always remember Josna, a Women’s Squad leader. Her whole person was just great, she is a true leader and so clearly a huge pillar of support to the other women. I could tell so easily from body language and vibe from the other women how much they respected and loved her. It’s felt so important to witness first-hand how the projected had changed lives and given communities a sense of pride, hope and togetherness. What was most moving for me was the idea that we all left with something, both the women I photographed and the team created memories that would last a lifetime. The series was shot by @rosie_matheson as part of the @BritishRedCross It starts with her appeal in partnership with #UKAidMatch. Together they are supporting thousands of strong women to build stronger communities in disaster-prone slums in Bangladesh.
