**COMMUNITY SAFETY ALERT**

Livingston County Sheriff's Office 18.04.2021

It’s that time of year again when all of our members of the 4 bureaus re-certify for CPR/AED training. The members go through a 4 hour class taught by instructors from our Office. We use the American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR/AED. They must be re-certified ever 2 years. To pass the class they pass a written and practical examination. A CPR call usually begins with a person calling 911 for a person down. As the Dispatcher is receiving the information, he/she i...s giving the caller CPR instructions and another Dispatcher is dispatching law enforcement, fire and EMS. As soon as a Deputy arrives, the Deputy will take over and administer life saving measures. Fire and EMS will soon arrive, and again take over and transport the patient. In our Jail Division and Court Security Division, all members are trained to perform CPR if an inmate, visitor, or other staff member collapses. Pictured below are some of our Dispatchers who received their recertification status!

INTERSTATE 390- Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Knoxville Tennessee resident on felony charges after a traffic stop. On October 24, 2020 Deputy Michael Telesca was dispatched to Interstate 390 for a report of a vehicle driving erratically. The Deputy Sheriff located the vehicle in question and initiated a traffic stop. The operator of the vehicle was identified as 29 year old Christopher S. Giuka. The Sheriff’s Deputy suspected that Giuka was under the in...fluence of alcohol and conducted a roadside DWI investigation which included the performance of standardized field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the roadside investigation, Giuka was taken into custody for DWI. Giuka was then transported to the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters where Deputy Heather Benjamin of the Jail Division administered a breathalyzer test. The breathalyzer revealed that Giuka had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .18%. A records check revealed that Guika had a previous DWI related conviction in June of 2016. Giuka’s driver’s license was also revoked for a DWI related conviction. Giuka was arrested and charged with felony Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC greater than .18%, felony Driving While Intoxicated, and felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 1st Degree. The DWI and AUO charges were felonies due to the previous convictions. Giuka was then turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and issued appearance tickets for the charges as the offenses did not qualify for pre-arraignment detention under the NYS Justice Reform Act. Giuka was released to a responsible third party and provided a future court date. Deputy Michael Wade assisted on scene with the investigation.

Livingston County has created a Fleet Maintenance Facility at Livingston County Highway. This was created in an effort to streamline repairs and save the County taxpayers money. All vehicles that the Sheriff's Office purchases, up-fits and maintains are serviced through the Fleet Center. Pictured is one of the new 2020 Chevrolet Tahoes (Fleet# 1117) that is being up fitted to be used as a "slick top" Patrol Services Vehicle. Also pictured is the first black on black subdued lettered STOP DWI Dodge Charger that was put in service a few years ago by the Fleet Center. The members of the Sheriff's Office greatly appreciate the quality work that is performed by the employees at County Highway to keep us safe.

LEICESTER - Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports of a fatal motor vehicle crash into a building. On October 27, 2020 at approximately 6:57 am, Sheriff’s Deputies and emergency personnel responded to the intersection of Cuylerville Road and Canandaigua Street for the report of a vehicle that had crashed into a building. Responding units arrived and found that the vehicle involved was well into the building. Both the vehicle and building were fully engulfed in flames with a p...erson trapped inside the vehicle. Bystanders who had arrived prior to emergency personnel had attempted to free the operator but the fire became too much and the building began to collapse. The extreme flames, debris falling and smoke pushed the good Samaritans out of the building. Several firefighters with the Cuylerville, Leicester, Geneseo, York, Mt. Morris, Dansville, Perry, Perry Center, Castile, Nunda, and Caledonia Fire Departments worked diligently to extinguish the flames as members of the Sheriff’s Office investigated the crash. The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle involved was traveling westbound on Cuylerville Road and failed to negotiate a sharp curve in the roadway before striking and entering the building where the vehicle ignited and fire quickly spread to the building. Once the fire was completely extinguished, investigating Sheriff’s Deputies were able to confirm that there was one (1) occupant in the vehicle and that the occupant was the driver and was deceased. The body was transported to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and has been positively identified as 26 year old Joshua L. Truax of Leicester following a dental comparison. Members of the Sheriff’s Office Command Staff, Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Forensic Identification Unit (FIU), Communications Bureau, and Drone Unit conducted and coordinated the investigation under the command of Patrol Division Acting Captain Ryan Swanson. The Livingston County Fire Coordinator’s Office, Livingston County EMS and the Livingston County Coroner's Office assisted on scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
