The Rev. Dr. Gregory Robeson Smith presides over flock at Mother A.M.E. Zion Church that once included black leaders such as Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth and Paul Robeson.During October 1796, a band of dedicated African-American Christians led by James Varick left the John St. Methodist Episcopal Church in N.Y.C. to form their own church. Today, the A.M.E. Zion Church is composed of 1.5 million members on five continents, and has made significant contributions to Community, Education, Civil Rights and the Elimination of Hatred. This is a Blueprint for Church’s throughout New York City to follow.
