Yesterday during the Reenergize Town Hall Week for Resilience Together, the Wellness Committee hosted a virtual ribbon cutting in the newly named The Oasis! Last month, the Wellness Committee hosted a hospital-wide contest to provide a permanent name for the Wellness Centerone that reflects the unique character and spirit of MSM. Congratulations and thank you to Dr. Brian Radbill, Chief Medical Officer, who provided us with the winning name! The Oasis is a place where our ...hard-working and dedicated staff can put their feet up, relax, and take a few minutes out of their busy day to recharge. The Oasis is located on ACC (Clark) 9 and is open throughout the week. Message us for more information if you are a staff member and is interested in stopping by (you know you want to!)
I would like to recognize EVS Tech Nichole Bruce for her outstanding work in the Mount Sinai Morningside Emergency Department. She started in the ED several months ago and has been going non-stop ever since. Nichole is determined to make the ED always look its best, cleaning everything in sight. She makes my job easier as she writes down any items in the ED that need repair and makes sure I know about them on a real time basis. Nichole also has a positive, upbeat attitude that make everyone feel good. Thank you, Nichole! Anthony White, Supervisor, ED Handlers and Equipment at Mount Sinai Morningside, shares his appreciation for his colleague Nichole Bruce. #StoriesOfExcellence #MountSinaiStrong
Can we make Mocktail Monday a thing? On Monday, May 10, the Nursing Night Staff enjoyed a one-night-only Lounge Night in Luke’s Café! The hard-working (and equally enthusiastic) night crew had the opportunity to enjoy music, the chance to win fabulous prizes, and a crowd-favorite, mocktails mixed by one of NYC’s finest mocktail bartender, @makemesomethingfun [Instagram]! It was a very fun and engaging event, and we were thrilled that our night staff had such a good time celebrating each other as Nurses Week continues! Cheers to all of you!

Arun Sinha had one goal: to climb Mount Everest. For nearly a decade, he kept this goal in sight. Arun, who is now 56, was in shape and often walked 50 flights of stairs a day at work for exercise. There was only one thing standing in his way: medical clearance from a physician. It was at the doctor’s office that Arun learned that he had several severely blocked arteries. He could not be cleared for the trip. ... Dr. Puskas is a world leader in minimally invasive robotic surgery and performs many such procedures, but in Arun’s case, a blockage in the left anterior descending artery was intramyocardialburied deep in the muscle of the heart. So Dr. Puskas performed open-heart surgery. All three main arteries required bypass, and one required two bypasses, he said. Arun’s surgery was a success, and took place on the same day he would have climbed Mount Everest Base Camp. Eventually, he signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this past summer/fall. In September 2020, Arun completed a 100-mile hike over 26 rugged mountains and about 20,000 elevation gain along the Appalachian Trail, similar to Mount Everest Base Campan achievement for any hiker, not to mention one who has had multiple bypass surgery: https://mshs.co/de
Claudia Paul's "Faces of Resilience" project, featuring Mount Sinai Morningside staff, was highlighted on Good Morning America today. The photos "capture the resiliency of healthcare workers during the pandemic." Watch now.
(5/5) The previous posts captured the story of best friends Beth Mella and Jenna Morgan, ICU Nurses at Mount Sinai Morningside, and the moment these two got their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccineas they did everything else during this pandemicside-by-side. We wanted to share this moment, as it was captured by Dr. Lindsey Gottlieb, Morningside’s Director of Infection Prevention, who, similarly to Beth and Jenna, was a new mom to a little boy when the COVID-19 pandemic firs...t hit New York. We share these stories to show you the real people behind the #HealthcareHero hashtagregular people, doing extraordinary things.
(4/5) We do this for our families. For our sons. For our husbands who try so incredibly hard to understand, while dealing with so much stress themselves. One day, when our boys are older, they will get to hear the stories of how their moms fought on the frontlines in Manhattan during the height of the pandemic. They’re going to grow up knowing how #NYStrong their moms are.

COVID-19 Survivor James Colon pictured with the Rehab Dream Team! Yesterday, we shared James’ miraculous recovery story with you. James not only survived an extreme case of COVID-19, but he also overcame countless secondary COVID-19 complications and ailments that almost claimed his life. But James is a fighter. He spent 195 days with Mount Sinai, but he is now home with his family. In a touching farewell to our team, James said, All of you have been a blessing and so good to me. I will never forget this for as long as I live. We will never forget you, either, James! Congratulations on your recovery
At 50 years old, Peter Cole was diagnosed with a precursor condition to #MultipleMyeloma, called Monoclonal Gammopathy of Unknown Significance. He was referred to our team at the Mount Sinai Multiple Myeloma Center of Excellence. He has enjoyed a full remission due to success with a relatively new medication, Daratumumab. "I feel quite strong," Peter says. I log in 60 to 80 miles a week on my bicycle during the season, swim regularly and continue full time with my architect...ural design practice. I am extraordinarily grateful to my Mount Sinai team. Dr. Cho is clearly extremely knowledgeable about Multiple Myeloma, but as important, he is warm and compassionate and his good sense of humor helps lighten the load. I also want to recognize the highly skilled and empathic Mount Sinai team, including a nutritionist and physical therapist, who have been a valued source of support during a challenging time in my life. They have provided a depth of expertise, facilities and resources that have been invaluable to me. Read his full #PatientStory: https://fal.cn/3b83X
Today, we have the great privilege of sharing the story of Mr. James Colon with the world. James was admitted for COVID-19 on Easter Sunday (April 12), where he began an unfortunate tour of the Mount Sinai Health System--from Mount Sinai Queens, to the Central Park tents, and finally to Mount Sinai Morningside. After 195 days within the Mount Sinai Health System, James will be discharged today. James is a survivor. He not only beat an extreme case of COVID-19, but also overca...me countless secondary COVID-19 complications, such as COVID pneumonia and acute hypoxic failure, septic shock, a bacterial superinfection, multiorgan failure resulting in hemodialysis, and cardiac shock. He was on ventilator support for months, and had countless failed trials coming off the ventilator. After miraculously surviving all of these complications, James spent 47 days with our rehab team in intensive therapy. Until today, James was the longest stay patient at Mount Sinai Morningside. 195 days of fighting, and James is going home. Deserving of a celebration, the interdisciplinary team on our Rehabilitation Unit came together to escort James from his room with a cheerful recognition of his discharge. Congratulations, James! We are all amazed and inspired by your perseverance and your will to overcome every obstacle in your path. Thank you to our rehab therapists, nurses, physicians, and all Mount Sinai Morningside staff who saved James’ life, and gave him and his family hope.
Janice Benjamin was at the gym, powering through her normal workout when her cardiologist called with bad news. Janice needed open-heart surgery due to a faulty mitral valve. She turned to Mount Sinai's Dr. David H. Adams for her surgery. The surgery went well, as Dr. Adams and his team were able to repair her mitral valve completely, correcting the severe regurgitation that had been causing her symptoms and affecting her heart’s ability to pump. Two months after the surgery, Jan was already walking four miles per day, had completed her cardiac therapy, and had resumed light workouts. They did a fantastic job, she said, praising the entire surgical team. It was minimally invasive, and my friends all call my scar ‘cute’ because it’s so small.
