Registration is open for Separate But Connected live online in May! And there is still time to buy the 3-course bundle of our Foundational Series before the first course in April. Link to all course info and registration in comments. *************************************** Separate But Connected... Training Selective Control of the Hips, Pelvis, and Low Back Freedom and stability in the trunk depend on freedom and stability in the hips. In this course, we will use the model of lumbo-pelvi-femoral rhythm as a means of organizing the legs, pelvis, and low back in whole body movements. This model integrates and improves upon both static models of lumbar stabilization (neutral pelvis/spine) and the Classical Pilates view of spinal mobility (one vertebra at a time). As teachers, our tools are demonstration, touch, and language. To be effective teachers our demonstration must be fully embodied, our touch supportive, and our language direct or poetic as needed. Movement Science Made Simple joins current concepts in anatomy, kinesiology, and motor learning with time-tested movement training strategies, giving workshop participants new skills to work with diverse client populations. #movementsciencemadesimple #movementsciencematters #lifelonglearning #pilates #freeyourhips

Movement Science Made Simple 10.06.2021

Recently, we have gotten a bit of flak about the name Movement Science Made Simple. Some folks really take issue with the made simple part, and seem to think we’re encouraging a For Dummies'' approach. That’s not at all the case! When we named MSMS, we had in mind the quote that’s often (mis)attributed to Einstein about how if you can’t explain something simply you don’t really understand it. We wanted our programming to synthesize relevant research as well as our practic...al experience, and for the end result to be straightforward enough to be useful to movement teachers of all different backgrounds. We see movement and exercise professionals (and rehab professionals, tbh) getting seduced by conceptual trends and losing the big picture. In many cases, an interesting bit of research has been extrapolated way beyond whatever the original studies suggested (glute amnesia, anyone?) Or a respected practioner’s ideas have been widely disseminated without ever being questioned. A basic understanding of joint kinematics, exercise science, motor learning theory, and pain science provides a foundation to evaluate and adopt/discard new ideas and techniques as they come our way. We’ve heard it said that you shouldn’t think outside of the box until you understand what’s in the box, and we agree! Or we could update the old KISS principle to Keep It Simple and Supported by evidence! #movementsciencemadesimple #movementsciencematters #keepitsimple #evidencebasedpractice #fakelichtenstein #bendaydots

We're missing the weather that goes with being there in person , but we're happy to attend @sandiegopainsummit online! If you've never been, this is a great opportunity to do so without the expense of traveling. Pilates teachers are underrepresented at this conference and we'd love to see more of our colleagues there in the future! #painscience #painscienceeducation #movementsciencemadesimple #sandiegopainsummit

This quote from André Bernard reminds us that movement originates in our nervous system, and that as teachers of movement we interact with our students' nervous systems in a variety of ways - through the words and images we use, through touch, through the visual environment of the studio, through props and equipment. André was a teacher of @cprpilates at NYU, working in the tradition of Ideokinesis, meaning "the image or idea or thought as facilitator of movement." He prefer...red just to describe his work as "a creative approach to human movement and alignment." We embrace both definitions and are grateful for the influence of his work on what we do! #ideokinesis #movementsciencemadesimple #creativehumanmovement #creativehuman #pilates

There is so much pain in the world right now, it may seem...trivial? to discuss the trauma of the middle and high school phenomenon that is (was? do they do this anymore?) the Presidential Fitness Test. And yet. This episode lays bare, in entertaining (and profane) fashion the ways that bad science and misplaced anxiety result in crap policy. So many implications beyond how horrible it was to run that mile and do those pull-ups. This podcast is a spinoff of the wonderful You're Wrong About That, and it's delightful. https://open.spotify.com/episode/4mrfSbwRbaieLKTCaS7KkW

Next up in out webinar series: hip stuff! https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/adm/main_enroll.asp Working with Common Hip Pathologies... a webinar in three 90-minute sessions In the Pilates studio, we encounter many clients with hip pain and/or a diagnosis of a particular hip pathology. While it is not our job as Pilates teachers to treat a client’s hip diagnosis, it is helpful to be familiar with some of the conditions we commonly encounter. This understanding allows us to better communicate with our clients and other practitioners, and gives us the confidence to move forward with a client in pain. In this 4.5 hour webinar, we will discuss: Hip dysplasia Femeroacetabular impingement (FAI) Osteoarthritis of the hip Gluteal tendinopathy and trochanteric bursitis We will learn strategies for making choices within the Pilates environment that honor contraindications and precautions. And we’ll include a discussion of recent findings in pain science as they relate to hip pain.

Join @cprpilates and @jl_dpt for our introductory pain science course for movement teachers! Link in comments. Many of our Pilates clients seek us out because they are in pain, and most of our clients will have pain at one time or another. Often, the pain will resolve as tissues heal, muscles strengthen, and the client improves their overall fitness. But how do we judge how fast to progress a client in pain? And what about the people who don’t get better? In orde...r to work effectively we must understand what pain is, and the role of the central nervous system in pain processing. Advances in pain science demonstrate that rather than being simply a signal from the body that something is wrong, pain is an output of the brain. And each individual’s pain experience depends not just (and sometimes not at all) on tissue damage, but on their history, their thoughts and beliefs, and the baseline state of their nervous system. Further, research has shown that educating our clients about pain can reduce their pain and improve their function. In this Movement Science Made Simple course, we will: Update our understanding of pain, and learn to convey that understanding to clients Familiarize ourselves with the symptomatology of common painful conditions of the low back, shoulder, and hip Learn movement protocols for getting started with clients in pain

Join @cprpilates @jl_dpt and @laurakarpinski on Saturday, June 20th for a 90-minute class to benefit Feeding America! Link in comments Saturday, June 20th 10-11:30 AM (MDT) $25... This is a difficult time for the country and the world. While we have faced our own challenges, we feel lucky that we have each been able to move much of our work online, and that we continue to have an income during the pandemic. We feel even luckier that when so many people all over the world live a precarious day-to-day existence, we enjoy relative stability in our lives. The crisis is far from over. Our thoughts have turned to the many Americans who struggle to feed themselves and their families in the best of times, and are facing further hardship in the wake of the coronavirus. We want to do something to help! All of the proceeds from this class will be donated to Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund, and will be matched by an equal donation from Movement Science Made Simple. This 90-minute Zoom class will emphasize the smart movement sequences Movement Science Made Simple are known for, while providing a fun workout and an opportunity to connect virtually with other teachers around the country and the world.

This podcast is wonderful, partly because it reinforces what we have always said about not vilifying the upper traps. But it is also a master class in how to reason around EMG studies, muscle "activation" and rehab! Thank you Nadia Katz for pointing this out!

"Working with Common Lumbar Pathologies" @cprpilates and @jl_dpt have added a second run of their 3-part webinar, beginning June 3rd (link in comments). Illustration by @kriotawillberg ********************************** In the Pilates studio, we see many clients with low back complaints. While back pain is complex, and the majority of low back pain is "non-specific," it is helpful to understand common conditions that may be contributory. This understanding allows us to better... communicate with our clients and other practitioners, and gives us the confidence to move forward with a client in pain. In this webinar, we will discuss: Degenerative disc disease Disc bulges and herniations Lumbar stenosis Facet joint arthritis Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis We will learn exercise protocols, as well as strategies for making choices within the Pilates environment that honor contraindications and precautions. And we'll have a short introduction to pain science, in order to understand some of the non-structural contributors to back pain. Total Costs (includes all 3): $150 Registration for a single session is not permitted, as the information is cumulative.

Link in comments! ******************************************** Posture, Pain, and Performance With Jeremy Laverdure and Cara Reeser Friday 4/24 11 am MDT (1 pm EDT)... $35 For fitness and rehab professionals, including Pilates teachers, it seems intuitively correct that better posture results in less pain and better physical performance. But the research indicates that some of our inherited notions about good posture might be outdated. In this 2 hour webinar, we’ll look at what constitutes a normal balance among the sagittal spinal curves and examine established paradigms such as Janda’s upper crossed and lower crossed syndromes. We’ll consider posture in the context of neck and back pain. We’ll think about places in the Pilates repertoire where certain postural styles are at a disadvantage. And we’ll sort through our received ideas about posture and figure out what to keep and what to let go of.

It's been a few years since we've heard someone say straight out to a client, "Your back hurts because your core is weak" but those ideas seem to still be out there. This blog from Eric Bowman clears up the confusion. Via the always helpful Physio Network.
