Another fun and informative article by Michael Kimmelman in The New York Times. Thank you Art Deco Society of New York for your posting of this article. Also I highly recommend Daniel Okrent book Great Fortune:The Epic of Rockefeller Center

August Belmont, Jr. - NYAC president in 1893 - founded the Interborough Rapid Transit Company in 1902, which built and operated New York City’s first undergroun...d subway. To seek respite from the invariably overcrowded trains, Belmont commissioned the construction of a private subway car in 1905. The Mineola, as Belmont named it, came equipped with a kitchen, bathroom and study. The Tiffany glass, gilt ceiling and white coat wait service added to the opulence of the Mineola, believed to be the first and only private subway car in the world. A private railroad car is not an acquired taste, wrote Eleanor Robson, Belmont’s wife. One takes to it immediately.
