Congratulations to Alum Alison Causer (@alisonmcauser) on her upcoming group exhibition The Indivisible Spectrum at the Painting Center (@thepaintingcenter) in view from February 1st - 26th, 2022. Opening Reception: TONIGHT Thursday, February 3rd, 5 - 8pm. The Painting Center is pleased to present the exhibition, The Indivisible Spectrum, curated by JoAnne McFarland, Perri Neri, Kristin Osterberg. This group exhibition of sixteen artists from The Painting Center’s Art File. ...The Indivisible Spectrum explores how the creative process is powered by infinitesimal shifts artists make between colors, shapes, sizes, and media. In this time mired in political polarization, artists mediate all of the ‘gray areas’ between extremes in order to create works of art. The concept for The Indivisible Spectrum comes from JoAnne McFarland, Artistic Director of Artpoetica Project Space in Gowanus, Brooklyn. McFarland was The Golden Paint Fellow at The Painting Center, 20202021. The Indivisible Spectrum highlights the work of sixteen Art File artists who harness the textures and tones of the visible spectrum (the range of colors humans can see) while reaching for artistic statements that lie beyond easy comprehension. The word indivisible is the longest word in the Pledge of Allegiance. It remains mesmerizing in its potentiality, and as a symbol of what we may yet achieve as citizens and makers. The artists in The Indivisible Spectrum include Robin Adsit, Susan Barrett, Scott Bennett, Alison Causer, Michel Droge, Teresa Dunn, Philip Gerstein, George Herman, Gosha Karpowicz, Douglas Newton, Lin Price, Naomi Schlinke, Virginia Sharkey, Kevin Sloan, Laura Von Rosk, Stella Zhang.

My time at the New York Studio School helped me realize the importance of the fundamental components of the visual language; the act of drawing, the form, and the color, and how all of these elements come together to transcend an idea, experience, and image." Paul Resika: Allegory (San Nicola di Bari) opens TODAY, January 31st. This series of paintings, presented by the New York Studio School, in collaboration with Bookstein Projects, is derived from an obscure engraving made of a panel from an altarpiece predella (ca. 1437) by Fra Angelico on the life of St Nicola of Bari. Ranging from somewhat-faithful reinterpretations to sparse abstractions painted in fantastic colors, this series offers a range of styles that Resika has made ...all his own. The Green Line / The Romance & Logic of Color: Painting Marathon VIRTUAL with Graham Nickson & Guests June 21st - July 2nd, 2021 9am - 6pm GENEROUS PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE ... https://nyss.org//painting-marathon-virtual-with-graham-n/ COURSE DESCRIPTION The importance of color cannot be overstated, often derided as too emotional or romantic, its journey throughout history is helpful to know. We will study color from caves of 50,0000 years ago to the color of Egyptian walls, to Indian and European Miniatures leading to the colors of cities and to pastoral color. The importance of color is its relation to the ‘whole’. When Matisse painted the green stripe of color on Madame Matisse’s nose, a revolution in depiction happened, the basis of modernist looking. We will explore this and see its implications today. The dependence on local color and its being challenged has proved to be very rich territory to explore. Local color led to conceptual color, and then ultimately to perceptual color. Color has enormous effect on imagery, it can endorse the image and content profoundly. We will work on small paintings every day that show the students an understanding in new possibilities in harmonies, which will in turn affect the large paintings which they do. We will make transcriptions from unlikely works from different centuries and cultures of the deep past and of the present, these will be important and ambitious. Color, weight, scale and color mixing will be part of the program; Be prepared for an adventure. https://nyss.org//painting-marathon-virtual-with-graham-n/

Life-Size Figure: Sculpture Marathon IN-PERSON with Brandt Junceau June 21st - July 2nd, 2021 9am - 6pm COURSE DESCRIPTION... The life-size figure is a touchstone of sculpture, which has been remade and passed forward generation by generation, and must be refashioned once again, now. To make something as big as oneself, standing like oneself, with every feature and surface, a head, a face, a gaze like oneself: that is a very peculiar proposition, unlike anything else mankind makes for ourselves, which must have been strange, startling, and intimidating the first time. It continues to be. This class is not an anatomy lesson, it is an investigation of image and presence. Anatomy will be probed, and possessed: it serves a purpose. Basic modeling skills will be learned, and challenged: the figure creates them, to realize itself. One needn’t have done this before to try it now. A certain boldness in confronting self and other is necessary, and persistence, and a willingness to try for trying’s sake. One will not retain the big figure in clay. It will be broken down again to raw material. One takes away the confrontation, and possibility. Generous partial scholarships are available. https://nyss.org//sculpture-marathon-in-person-with-brand/

In order to go back to basics and reinvent himself as an abstract artist, he gathered these small stones and rocks that he found serendipitously around Paris and he brought them back to his studio. He set them up on tables and would draw them. We don’t have any drawing that is what you would call an illusionistic or realistic representation of the rock. They are always these abstracting versions where there is some they are operating as a middle ground between the real and the ideal or the imaginary and I think that is a position where he was in his comfort zone as an artist. "There is something about knowing that there’s this underlying grid and structure to something that becomes really powerful. And knowing that you can break it all. Knowing that you can edge something the tiniest bit to give it a different feeling within the work itself. You know if I’m consciously making something twisting this way and then twisting out a different way than it can actually diverge or converge and these are things that I am aware of. I did so much study of t...he Fibonacci Sequence and gold rectangle when I was younger that it’s in there no matter what." - Fran O'Neill View the entire interview on GorkysGranddaughter.com with NYSS Marathon Instructor Fran O'Neill and @zacharykeeting @chris_joy1 Enroll today via the link in bio: ROOM WITH A VIEW: Landscape Painting Marathon VIRTUAL with Fran O’Neill June 21st - July 2nd, 2021 / 9am - 6pm EST #franoneill #grokysgranddaughter #newyorkstudioschool #painting #paintingmarathon
